Got a request about him. We used to have quite a bit on him in the older groups that's been lost from the hacking and censorhsip attempts. Anything you have on him, please post or ask around from people who might know. Here's what I was able to find.
Ale's site has a warning in Italian. Here's the usual mangled Google translation.

"Medicines Story, also famous like Manitonquat, are an American white man who makes itself to pass for a Man Medicine Cerimoniale Wampanoag. Its true name is Francis Talbot. Talbot has found a fertile land for its illicit business institution them in the Northeast of the United States. In that area, where not Americans are nearly more NATO you, the communities of the little remained are dispersed and therefore also the traditions, have been relatively easy for he, under the instructions receipts from an other famous truffatore, Sun Bear, to assemble a group of persons with distant Indian origins but absolutely in the dark of the traditions of their people and debit life to a circle of it follows to us.
The spiritualit? diffused from Story Medicines not even far does not remember nobody of those pertaining to the Nations of the Northeast, is but a crucible of New Age and Lakota pseudo-traditions. The Wheel Medicines (Wheel of the Medicine) as an example does not belong to the East coast of the United States, but to the great praterie. No Old of no Nation Indiana d' America never mischierebbe two distant and various spiritual traditions therefore! Story medicines ago because: to) it is not Indian, therefore of frega. b) its follow to us or they are not Indian neanche, or have so lost contact with the traditions of their people that they do not believe is then therefore important. That that Francis Talbot is making, to make to pass not Indian for such and misleading Indians who try to find again their cultural traditions, are quite the new archetype of genocidio the cultural one that the New Age is perpetrating to the damages of the Indians of America.
Not content to make moneies through books and seminaries that diffuse false conceptions on the Indians of America (without not to pay the taxes because, misusing the name of the Wampanoag religion, Talbot is successful to make to record its enterprise as non-profit), Francis Talbot/Story Medicines succeeds also to infiltrate itself in (and it makes yourself to pay from the State for) programs of riabilitazione for imprisons Indian and of recovery of alcoholics and drug addicts to you. To take advantage for persons with serious problems that try to hard work to re-enter in the society and dargli to drink falsate versions of their ancestral religions is to say little infame.
As often it happens with the santoni of its type, also relationships Story the Medicine with its follow to us and the real one to be able that it has on they is nebulas. It will be opportune to remember that the “master??? of Story Medicines has been that Sun recently denounced Bear like ciarlatano from its same daughter: Winona LaDuke, famous activist enviromentalist American. Sun Bear had the deprecabile habit to be useful sexually for the women who took part to the rituals from he officiati. "It's too bad that Medicine Story Manitonquat Francis Talbot had to go and change perfectly wonderful creation stories to make his book more marketable. This book is published for children and it is reinforcing the stereotypes the dominant culture has of Indian Peoples."
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0943404207/ref=nosim/capelinkscapecod?dev-t=D2Y5TUCCVJ7DGE
"So sad that people who read Return to Creation believe that Francis Talbot is sharing actual indigenous wisdom. What he is sharing is new age philisophy that has had a detrimental impact in Indian Peoples. I'm pretty confident that those giving positive reviews of the book did not grow up in an Indian community (a real one, a rez, reserve or in Indian Territory). It continuously surprises me that non-Native Peoples feel they have the right to dictate to Indian Traditionals. Francis Talbot is an exploiter. He is doing more harm than good in the prison systems and exploits the prisoners as well, bilking donations to fund a program that consists of him going into prisons and talking about himself. I feel bad for the people he has managed to misinform with his hogwash. I feel bad for the indigenous community and prisoners he continues to profit from. I am glad to know that the American Indian Movement is compiling information on his nefarious behavior."
"I found a lot of untruths in this book when compared to Tradtitional Wamponoag teachings. For example, we do not encourage our men to sleep with other women when their wives are pregnant. I have liitle respect for an individual who would distort his culture and teachings to make a buck. He partakes in the capitolism he claims to detest."
"Medicine Story has bastardized the Wampanoag culture with this book. I have no respect for a Person who sells ceremony while the People are starving. He is a culture vulture."
Also notice the book's put out by the Bear Tribe. Talbot got his start with Sun Bear.

These are
a) excerpts from several German language sites with info on Manitonquat promoting events with him
b) info on ZEGG (Centre for Experimental Culture Design) and the related project of Tamera, as Manitonquat/Medicine Story cooperates with them on an apparently regular basis (e.g. by appearing at ZEGG's summer camps).
ZEGG is rated a destructive sect/cult, for example by:

Unfortunately, all critical material I found on the internet is in German language.
Please also be warned before reading that some of this may contain very descriptive language.

An Austrian site. Their c.v. info of Manitonquat reads as follows:
"Manitonquat is an elder of the Wampanoag Indians, a storyteller, co-founder of the Tribal Healing Council and a member of the Association for Humanist Psychology, a Re-Evaluation Counselor, a teacher, and an author.
M. has been editor of Akwesasne Notes for a long time, the official newspaper of the Mohawk nation. His work contributed to make it possible to revitalize the cultural values of the Indian nation with legends and ceremonies. After completing his course of studies at Cornell University/New York, he ran his own theatre, was an author, a film director, and an actor. Later on, he turned his back on all this while on a search for social values and started to concentrate on his Indian roots. He started to lead sweatlodges and other ceremonies, to tell stories, to use the talking stick and to teach co-counseling. According to his vision, he began to travel, to give lectures, and to work with young people and convicts. His openness and generosity go beyond ethnic, political, and religious borders. In this way, people form talking stick circles, healing circles, and healthy human relationships.
Manitonquat Medicine Story is the author of several books: "Return to Creation", "The People of the Morning Light", and "The Circle Way" - books full of wisdom which have been translated into several languages already.
Story is accompanied on his travels by his Swedish wife Ellika Linden. Ellika is an author of theatre plays for children, often on Indian topics, she makes dolls and masks. She leads theatre workshops and seminars on female spirituality and, together with M., she leads courses on re-evaluation counseling.

"During the afternoon, there was an invitation by Manitonquat who introduced co-counseling, a very effective possibility to deal with conflicts which relies on mutual listening very much.

In the evening, there was Manitonquat again. In the big tent, he reported about his life and about his projects.
"Religion is how you live your life, and not what you say or believe."

"At the beginning of this morning, we welcomed Manitonquat and his wife Ellika.
M. just arrived from his own summer camp in Mecklenburg. He has just published a new book, "Changing the world", which researches the meaning of tribes for a worldwide cultural change. He is of Indian descent from the tribe of Wampanoag Indians. He is visiting us regularly since many years and shares his stories and experience with us. He will spend the entire next week with us and we are very glad about this."

This is a comment by Manitonquat himself, written in English language. The CD advertised and praised at this site is done by ZEGG.
"Congratulations on your book. It happens I am working on a booklet about "The Circle", and there is a part about singing which you are welcome to use in whatever way may fit your needs. I am sad we won`t be singing those songs at sea on the Kairos any more, but I will be glad to have the songs in a book so that I can give my circles here the pleasure of some of that music.
In Germany, ZEGG, one of my favorite communities, has a marvelous chorus performing a wide range of international music, especially African, American Indian, and spiritual songs and mantras. They have compiled their favorite songs in a book which would be wonderful for any community to have. There is really nothing like singing to bring folks together!

PART TWO
http://www.agpf.de/ZEGG.htm
This is a site run by an Association for Mental and Psychological Freedom e.V. (a c503) researching dangerous religious cults and sects with an excellent and very extensive website.
"Tamera is a commune of strict vegetarians on a fallow area in Portugal, founded and lead by Sabine Lichtenfels ("Babette") and Dieter Duhm.
Both Dieter Duhm and Sabine Lichtenfels have gained a certain popularity with the issue of sexuality, they sold books, have made their fellow humans happy or provoked them.
'Both are co-founders and mental inspirators of the project which initiated ZEGG', Zegg website comments. Sabine Lichtenfels-Kleinhammes, alleged "protestant theologist and former prostitute" and "one of the leading ZEGG representatives and theoreticians" (source: ZEGGsismus brochure), also wrote books, for example "Save Sex".
Dieter Duhm started as a follower of Otto Muehl (convicted for sexually molesting children), than joined 'Bauhuette', and later on founded 'projects', like Meiga, ZEGG, and Tamera.
Tamera describes itself as a 'healing biotope' which apparently is meant to be a synonyme for a commune. At least theoretically, they are occupied with 'saving the world' with a 'concept of global healing'.
Camp ground
Tamera offers facilities at the level of a campground. "During summer season, we can host up to 200 guests in tents". The ordinary comfort gets replaces by high-faluting terms like summer university and IGF Institute for Global Freedom Work. In a "Peace School Mirja" and a "Youth School for Global Learning" they educate "Freedom Workers".
The Tamera website www.tamera.com continues:
'IGF initiates an international network of cooperation to persons of indigenous nations, to scientists, peace initiatives and concerned individuals', and 'IGF ... spreads the 'plan of healing biotopes'. This plan grounds in the 'Political Theory' by Dieter Duhm. It bases on two ideas: All is one being. And: All life reacts to information. Both sentences meanwhile are supported by scientific results... A lived peace information praticed at a few places on earth will get into the organism of earth'.
The website offers numerous ideological texts with a flood of words which makes it hard to discover real information. But they offer almost any catchphrase for which persons interested in 'alternative offers' may look.
Financial situation
The financial situation is of importance since they are not only asking the usual prices for accomodation and courses, but already start to ask for donations at the website in a verbose way. It is to be assumed that these requests will be reinforced vastly at the premises. There are many possibilities to give Tamera money (cf below). One popular way seems to be the 'Tamera Certificate' at EURO 2,500. ... It also does not get specified whether this sum will be a donation or a loan. According to their balance, it must be loans.
Balance Dec 31, 2003:
Actives
Cash: EURO 62,994.66
Investment and Purchase of Land: 1,388,300.00
Passives
owed to banks: 0.00
owed to friends, external: 338,722.86
owed to friends, internal: 239,891.26
Tamera certificates, external: 304,533.63
Tamera certificates, internal: 568,146.85
This raises problems for future loan givers: Investments and purchase of land combined are less than what is owed. This means there are no securities. Investment and purchase sum do not have anything to do with the real value of the grounds, and say even less about an amount for which the grounds may be sold or which may be obtained in case of a compulsory auction.
In 2003, EURO 64,033.73 was spent on "complete payment of bank loans". At the same time, another EURO 10,809.78 were spent on "cost of financing". This should just about cover bank interest. The sum cannot include interest payed on EURO 1.4 million, as a usual interest of 5% would amount to EURO 70,000. Therefore, these sums apparently are loans given without interest. Loan givers thus do not have securities, and also do not receive interest.
From: www.tamera.org :
'Taking the initiative for a peace project
When you support Tamera financially, you support the creation of a new culture.
Any sort of donations, money or goods, are welcome. There are the following possibilties of contributing to financing a healing biotope:
1. Tamera Sponsoring Circle
The circle was founded to keep Tamera as an international gathering place and to further develop the necessary infrastructure. Therefore we ask all persons who love the basic thought of Tamera and would like to contribute to its realization to join the circle with a regular monthly contribution.
All members will receive the IGF Magazine and an invitation to an annual meeting of the circle in Germany. And this is what to do....
2. Tamera Certificates
Those buying Tamera Certificates at EURO 2,500 each helps to keep Tamera free of debts and enables new projects. All owners of certificates are invited to Tamera for a week per year and will receive a copy of the IGF Magazine. Tamera Certificates may be sold.
3. Tamera Bricks
A symbolic brick at EURO 250 helps us to do more investment to build the healing biotope.
All owners of a Tamera Brick will receive the IGF Magazine and an invitation to an annual circle meeting in Gemany.
4. Tamera Sponsorship
For donations of EURO 50,000 and above, you will become a sponsor of Tamera healing biotope. We will plant a tree for every sponsor at our symbolic Sponsors' Avenue. Sponsors are invited to all public events in Tamera.
5. Sponsoring Tamera
[translator's note: this sounds redundant, but par. 4 uses the German word for sponsorship, and the English term 'sponsoring' for par.5]
Any way of sponsoring and the respective services in return will be mutually agreed upon (financial and donations of goods).
6. Project Partnership
Persons supporting a project of the healing biotope (e.g. Youth School, Peace Garden or Tamera Arts) with at least EURO 10,000 will become a project partner. Project partners will also be invited to public events at Tamera and will be informed about the progress of 'their' project on a regular basis

[This is an excerpt of a brochure on ZEGG. This excerpt contains some very descriptive language.]
http://www.nadir.org
ZEGGsism. Students of Free University of Berlin, 1995
The brochure starts with an inquiry regarding ZEGG's finances, the different companies founded by them, their system of 'networks', frequent speakers at ZEGG premises, and also portrays ZEGG's view of racism.
page 6
[the brochure dates from the mid-90ies]
"The premises at Belzig cost some DM 80,000 per month, therefore all permanent inhabitants must pay a monthly rent of DM 600. Prices for guests are not cheap either: DM 100 for an info weekend, DM 500 for a seminar of 4 days, and the Summer Camp in 1994 charged DM 1,010 for accomodation in a tent and up to DM 1,430 for accom in a single room for a fortnight."
page 41
"In their Networks project, ZEGG aim at a cooperation between like-minded groups and individuals. At a meeting in April 94, 'Stamm Fuessen' was among the participants."
[translator's note: This 'Fuessen Tribe' is a nuage project promoting sexual relations between adults and children of all ages. ZEGG have linked to them from their various sites until recently, but meanwhile took all respective links down. I saw the link to this outfit researching ZEGG sites in 2001/2002, but in October 2005 did not see any.]
page 12
Speakers listed
Among the speakers listed by the authors of the brochure are:
"Batty Thunder Bear Gold and Rose Thunder Eagle Fink from the Deer Tribe
This 'plastic medicine man from the artificially created Deer Tribe which does not have much in common with Native Americans together with Rose Thunder Eagle Fink - also from Deer Tribe - offer seminars with ZEGG on 'Indian-shamanic World View'. The 'medicine people' from Deer Tribe are criticized by many Natives because they have a reputation of de-politicizing their struggles or of trying to influcence them with reactionary input."
"Peter Caddy
Caddy - who died recently - was a former Major in Royal Airforce and in 1962 founded the 'Findhorn' community in Scotland which over the years developed into a multi-national NewAge company freed from paying taxes. Caddy was a theosophist and thus a follower of Helena Blavatsky according to whom there were seven "root races" following one another, with the "Aryan race" as the most developed one. The "Lower Races" (as for example: "Redskins, Eskimos, Papuas, Australians etc.") will have to die out according to this theory in order to make way for the "higher races", the fifth at the moment. In Findhorn, Caddy meant to lay the foundation for the sixth root race. For ZEGG he did lectures e.g. on "Liveliness of Nature"."

"alleged shaman Frank Natale"
"Manintonquat, story teller of the Wampanoag tribe "
[transl. note: as the brochure was published in the mid-90ies, this indicates a regular and long-term cooperation of Manintonquat with ZEGG]
page 22
Here is an outline of ZEGG views on racism, its causes and remedies:
"The responsibility of every person, but foremost of all women, according to ZEGG is to live their sexuality freely. This is seen as a prerogative for solving all problems in the world, like hunger, poverty, racism, war..., as a ZEGG quote shows:
'The real hunger in Third World Countries will not cease to exist until the hunger for love in Europe and the USA has not been stilled'. ZEGG-Magazine 4/92
'Racism, too, is to be seen as having its roots in the oppression of sexuality.' Janine Mueller, ZEGG-Magazine 2/92
[transl note: As far as the article is quoted in the brochure, it almost excuses violence against imigrants who get described as lusting after European women.]
"For Janine Mueller, female imigrants seem to be non-existant..., and women apparently for her are all white. As is the case with 'classic' racists, an alleged sexual threat towards white women (as perceived by ZEGG) is made by imigrants against white women... So if women eventually accepted their role, they could prevent racism."
page 18
"The Image of Women at ZEGG
According to ZEGG, a "liberated sexuality" is the way to ban every kind of evil from earth. This kernel piece of its ideology dates back till the beginnings of AAO [Action Analytic Organisation] which claimed that only during orgasm energy may flow freely (leanings to the thought of Wilhelm Reich!) In a pretty blind and indifferentiated way, the cause for social problems is seen in the oppression of sexuality. Any mechanisms of oppressions ... are disregarded.
Racism and the decrease of environmental conditions - coined as "eco catastrophe" - again are problems which the propagandists of "Let's screw the world free" see as being caused by the oppression of sexuality.
They develop a new concept of 'love' - a love which for them only exists between man and woman - which is meant to be the solution to all our problems. Women take a very special role in this concept. Sabine Lichtenfels, protestant theologist and former prostitute, who is one of the leading ZEGG representatives and theoreticians next to Dieter Duhm is occupied with the women's role in ZEGG and with "Spirituality and Eros".
In (ZEGG run) Meiga Publishing House, she published the books "The Hunger behind the Silence. Approaches towards sexual and spiritual realities" and "Save Sex. A Manifesto by women for a new sexual humanism", and a brochure titled "The Desert Camp. Project for contemporary spirituality and life research. A Place for all meaningful questions of survivial" (the place in question is the Spanish island of Lanzarote where an Eros Academy is situated). In her publications, she repeatedly emphasizes claims about the "real nature of woman" - in her view, it is most important for women to change. ...
Although we do not want to offer a public forum to ZEGG's theories, we below repeat several quotes, since critics have often been met with the reproach of having taken sentences out of their context. ...
From "The Hunger behind the Silence" by Sabine Lichtenfels:
"As long as women do not have a positive relationship to sex, as long as they do not accept and approve of it they essentially are made of sex, pure sex, as long as they do not see their responsibility here but hand over responsibility and management to men, as long as women do that they will not be able to step out of their guilt dilemma. Almost all women do not want to accept their basic sexual nature. This is where their shame and self-condemnation have their roots. The women's actual reproach against men is not: You are using me as an object! This is just a justification born from repression. The actual reproach is: Why don't you do it [intercourse] now? Why don't you do it right? I want to be your object of lust. Much more than you think. If only a man understood this to its full extent! Only then I will feel whole and recognized as a woman. Only then I will feel roused. Where he knows to treat me wholly as "his piece" without violence and without contempt, only there he will touch me wholly.
A woman does not like to see this inner truth. An immense feeling of dependency rises in her when she looks into these depths of her soul. She feels internally dependent on him doing it. At first she will hate this dependency and therefore she will fight this inner truth with all her strength.
Only when she gets to the bottom of this inner truth she will be able to stop following a trace of self-humiliation, only then she will be able to discover her actual freedom and heightening which lies in her sexual nature. Only in integrating her basic nature she can arrive at a real indepence". (page 77/78)
-
contd.
page 19:
And worded slightly differently:
"Only in sex I am completely woman. Here is my source of revelation. And it is a very elementary one, unsentimental and in fact not very mystic. It is here where I find an actual trust in myself, my desire, and my fulfilment. Why doesn't the man see and accept that my body fully yearns for this elementary, objective, purely material fulfillment? It wants to be taken care of, served and treated and used accordingly. Sometimes I doubt, men and women only want this one thing. I think, women want it far, far more." (page 79)
One of the numerous examples for Lichtenfels' fixation on female sexuality only being imaginable in regard to the male sexual organ. It is also quite apparent which pressure this puts on men.
"A sexually mature women wants the token of the man that his phallus stands up only through her presence and his lust. Basically, a woman wants a 'decent erection' in a man. If this was not so complicated for both sides, hampered by stress, anxieties of failure, shame and much more, how refreshingly simple the contact would be. This is the source of her acknowledgement and therefore she will see she gets it. Because if she does not get it for some time, she will be missing something essential." (page 83)
A last quote from her book to show what Sabine Lichtenfels sees as "female identiy and sexuality":
"Let us have a woman speak from her deepest soul: to say it dramatically, only in sex lies my actual dignity and honour as a woman. The dignity of a woman always has got a hole. This is not dishonouring, but honouring me." (page 78)
page 20
In ZEGG's worldview, a woman is no more than sex, although women will repress this basic necessity and they refused to accept this. Only when women can accept this and let it happen, they can accept themselves. Due to traditional repression of their basic nature, women will have feelings of guilt and of contempt for men. If women succeeded at actively accepting this, men and women will not have to despise each other any longer, as women experienced acceptance and confirmation only in a man's desire - according to Sabine Lichtenfels.
Such theories reduce women to an object status and a willful body on claims of an alleged nature of woman. ...

"Politicizing Psycho Cults
The "Association for Spreading inaccepted Insights" and ZEGG (Centre for Experimental Culture Design)
These two cults do not have much in common on an organisatory level, but belong to the category of politicizing psycho cults. These groups have been founded by frustrated former leftists. They have a strong orientation towards guidance from a leader and an ideology which basically is nothing more but "screw yourself free". This often includes disregard of personal rights and is combined with considerably authoritarian elements. This is where they have a connection to the extremist right. ...
ZEGG: Centre for Experimental Culture Design
ZEGG comes from the same roots. It has its origins in the "Action Analytic Organisation" (AAO) run by Otto Muehl. This cult had its centre ... in Burgenland (Austria), later on at Gomera. After Otto Muehl and his wife Claudia Muehl were accused of rape, a group lead by Dieter Duhm split and left. Duhm is now leader of ZEGG. The Muehls were sentenced to prison for raping minors.
Although ZEGG has tried to distance themselves from this past, the relationship of this group towards "sex with children" is still unclear: "Free love also means the snesitive introduction of chidren with this issue".
Even though they refused the "Fuck Lists" maintained at AAO, a kindergarten run by the Cologne ZEGG chapter "Sex Peace" was closed as the staff had molested children sexually. A 4-year-old said in court: "It was all the nursery school teachers there, all of them did that".
Soon after the border of German Democratic Republic opened, ZEGG bought premises at Belzig which were formerly used by GDR secret service.
In Hamburg, ZEGG recruits a good part of its membership, so for example with its MEIGA Summer Camp ("Give love a chance")

Psycho Cults. The Practice of Soul Catchers. 1997
(German language, found at: http://www.agpf.de)
page 170:
ZEGG is run as a Limited.
page 172:
"Dieter Duhm, born 1942, is a long-term disciple in the esoteric scene with quite a past. His credo is: 'There are more people dying because of unfulfilled love each day than from car accidents'. His solution for traffic accidents, violence and each and any ill is simple: sex - because 'sexual energy is healing energy par excellence'."
Paraphrased: In 1978, Duhm founded a commune called Bauhuette which became infamous for sado-maso sexual practice and an epidemic of venereal disease which they allegedly cured on their own. Bauhuette went bankrupt and closed down.
In 1988, he founded the project Meiga in which Duhm and several former prostitutes were the leading figures. "In a 'Manifesto for a new sexual humanism' titled 'Save Sex', Duhm's intimate friend Sabine Lichtenfels and 9 other women demanded a "transformatory brothel": "Some women co-thinking our issues are working to prepare an alternative brothel." For: "The brothel is the other side of marriage. The issue of sexuality can be solved neither here nor there."
page 173
"The former theologist and former prostitute [Lichtenfels] describes what this may mean: 'Sometimes I understand those men who do not ask anymore but simply act. One calls this rape. I swear by all that I have seen and heard: Not in every rape the man will be also guilty [translator's note: this is no error in translation - it does say: ALSO guilty!]. Oh this insanity! Of course violence must disappear, but this will only work if and when a completely new and radically positive way of thinking regarding sex is spread'.
The crude theses regarding sexual violence are flanked by insane comments about AIDS: As the disease could not be traced down, 'like cancer and much more', to 'something ... like a virus' but was 'a special case of the usual sexual misery', it was 'the best and most lasting protection' to lead a 'free, fully lived sexuality', since: 'AIDS of course can be cured' - by sex!'."
pages 175-178 (mostly paraphrased)
On the pretence of building an ecological project, the Belzig premises were bought by ZEGG who at once started their commune of free love. Some guests commented in disappointment that the issue was not free love, but that ZEGG only sought to discover their weak points in seminars to use them against persons afterwards and bind them to the project. Some even spoke of brainwashing, as participants were expected to tell the others about every thought and feeling, and those who refused were accused of suffering from severe mental problems.
ZEGG also used nuage paroles to promote their project in the neighbourhood: their premises were announced as a pilote project for a "new society", they demanded an "overall theory of ecological wisdom", a "global transformation", the "new conditioning of human beings". Their "gospel of happiness by 'liberating sexuality' mixed ... everything which seemed to fit: Herbert Marcuse, Wilhelm Reich, Rudolf Steiner and Rudolf Bahro, several ecological philosophers, and Indian shamans, several mystics, and even Bhagwan". In Duhm's theology of 'free love', erotic experience becomes a 'sacrament', the eros becomes "the beginning of all things", and persons will only become a "member of life and creation" when they can overcome the traditional form of living as couples. Because "human beings are, due to their mental nature, a thousand times hornier than any animal".
"Skilful marketing, colourful posters and brochures ("Life in a harem and the arts of love") soon lured in hundreds of tourists. At between DM 65 and 80 per day, they were made to sleep in tents in freezing temperatures, listen to pseudo-scientific lectures and help reconstructing the buildings."
"Many of the leading women in ZEGG, as [speaker] Lee Voosen confirms, are former prostitures, but she hastily adds: "Absolutely self-determined, no victims".
pages 180-182
This is an account given by a young woman who stayed at the ZEGG premises for a seminar. She describes how participants were manipulated and controled e.g. by drastically minimizing their sleeping hours and allowing them to rest not before 3 a.m. while waking them up again at 6.30 a.m.
The woman also confirms the technique of participants constantly being told to share every thought and feelings with the entire group. She recalls she felt 'under control constantly'. When she was so tired she suffered from hallucinations, she was not told to get some sleep, but instead people insisted on her sharing 'her images'. Another form of control was not to give single rooms to participants.
She also reports that refusals to have sex were not tolerated and met by endless discussions with the entire group taking position against her. She mentions that Duhm himself talked to her several hours after her refusal to have intercourse with him, during which he repeated his claim that she need not be afraid of AIDS as this disease was curable by having sex with him. Duhm also advocated unprotected sex as the only way to allow the 'energies to flow freely'. He also claimed to have cured numerous women of AIDS with sex.
According to her report, there were also special seminars called 'work camps' offered at prices between DM 400 and DM 500 for a weekend, during which participants had to do urgent repairs at the Belzig premises.

Hallo from a very new member from Germany.
Within a very short time I learnt a lot about "Manitonquat". His name seems to be rather unique - through Google you meet him and his many supporters in a lot (European) languages - same on Wiki. So his faked bio is to find everywhere. Through a German forum (indianermagazin.de) I came about his real name Francis Talbot and many interesting details.
My problem now is that I can't argue with "New Agers" and Manitonquat followers in my surrounding (there are many!) with rumours on my tongue i.e. without a PROOF of the facts being true that Manitonquat is white and his civil name is Francis Talbot.
Most of those details came from Ale's Italian site - maybe he can give an evident source for those facts which are of course outrageous for a "real believer". ;D
Thanks for listening :), Pudow
-
A translation of a German site where one of Talbot's followers ADMITTED they all knew he was white, and his amazing admission that they don't care he's a fraud, or if he's telling made up nonsense "so f--ing what!" He goes on to admit there are some cult like aspects, but is still going there.

"Right, after two months this thing has come to my knowledge and I want to contribute. About me: I am seventeen years, in every-day life rather a shy, dark clothed heavy metal fan, so at first sight I have little in common with you or "esoterics" in general. At first sight, anyway, because since 5 years I have been taking part in the "German" camp with (not of!) Manitonquat every year. And since 3 years, I am one of the organisers of the very same camp.
Well, several things:
1. That Manitonquat' s real-life name is Francis Talbot and that he isn't of Indian descent, is something I have known since long (and not just I, but several persons in these camps. When you ask him, he doesn't make a secret of it), and:
Well, SO WHAT? Apparently he lived with the Wampanoag for a longer period of time and this alone qualifies him as a "stroy teller" and to speak about his experience. I don't remember that he ever called himself a "shaman" or guru or whatever, but some of the other participants in the camp in fact
do (I admit, Bear Tribe, but [original English:] who f*cking cares, as long as they have been thinking and come to some sort of wisdom?)
Another issue: "Exploitation"
As I am actively involved in financial planning and financial administration of the camp I know that the payment for Manitonquat, Ellika and Emmy, on whom I will write something later on, are just about 10% of the fees, the rest is rent for the premises (yes, the meadows have to be rented, incredible, isn't
it), materials, tents, whatever is needed when you put up 150 persons for 2 weeks in one place (you know....) and refunding of costs for the organisers (telephone, traveling, meetings, like such....). So it's about EURO 50 for 2 weeks with 3 teachers. Exploitation? Well, if you think so...
Next issue: "Cultural mishmash"
Does is say anywhere that we do a "pure Indian culture"? Not that I know of. It also never has been a "Manitonquat camp", but a camp of everyone who participated, with Manitonquat, Ellika and Emmy (will get to her later) as paid teachers. This never has been explicitely mentioned up to now, but after some minor frictions with Manitonquat, we will not only practice this from now on, but also announce it this way (but this is not the place here to discuss this).
Furthermore, the programme is not "We're playing Indians" but "We try to live like we think is right and like we would to all the time, for 2 weeks". As a tribe, in which every person has a voice and will be heard by everybody. And such a life simply is rooted most deeply within Indian traditions, about the only culture of which we can crib/of which we can get info [the German word used carries both meanings!], in most of the other cultures it has got watered down (unfortunately) by Christianity, colonialism, capitalism, or
even destroyed so that it has only little in common with the basic thought.
Furthermore the programme is not "Manitonquat tells about himself", but rather partipants learn something about a method called "Co-Counseling" . Ill-meaning voices could call this "New Age Philosophy", but complaints are bound to happen. Those who want to learn more can come and get information, I only
explain as much that this is about unconditional and loving care (care!, nothing more) for the vis-a-vis. This helps to work on past injuries and heal them, in order to cope better with the present situation. (So it's similar to psychotherapy, just lacking the imbalance between "therapist" and "patient".)
This method is taught mainly by Emmy (ex-wife of Manitonquat, if you're interested, a down-to-earth woman from Boston, a social worker there, and she isn't into esoterics in a narrower sense, as far as I picked up), but is also practiced by Manitonquat and Ellika (this is her real name, at least that's
what she says, and would be funny, if she claims she comes from Sweden but nonetheless has such an "esoteric" name).
And if someone minds that Manitonquat "waters down" Indian culture or "exploits" it, just think about this: Why should Indian culture by the ultimate in wisdom? And why should "New Age Philosophy" only be bad and full of charlatans?
If someone does not claim to teach Indian culture but just makes the world a bit more agreeable, why shouldn't he mix the good things of each world view together and tell this other people? And if these people are glad about this and can make their lives better with this, why shouldn't they give something
for it? As someone said in this thread: There's nothing for free in this world, so why should this be for free?
So long, am looking for reactions!
Jonus

"Well, so I only know the people I meet during the camps, but not the people who had bad experience with him. And even among those [in the camps] there are some really weird people who align their life according to this 'religion', but I don't believe this is really meant to be a religion, it's just that (okay, I know this sounds absurd) not everyone realizes that Manitonquat is just a human being, too.
I don't know much about his teacher, just met several people who have got to do with the Bear Tribe, but his teachings can't have been all that bad, since these are some of the best people I know. Right, so there are a few bad things about him in the internet. Just give me any claim and a week's time,
then I'll give you five proofs from the internet for anything....
I admit I don't know much (euphemism for "nothing at all") about the real existing Indian cultures in Northern America, but it is the only region where there is something like reminiscences of a "tribal life". (At least I as a transfigured European believe this, probably it isn't even true), resp. the only region on which one can get like information, albeit shady. Perhaps this is due to "Indiannness" being a trend, like, but my goodness, why not?
....P.S.: I must admit that these "village projects" sound somewhat fishy to me, above all ZEGG, but also Tamera sound suspicious to me (place is in Portugal, BTW, not in Spain). And not because of "dubious practiques" about which I don't know anything, and I also talked about this with insiders, but because
these projects all in all act very cult-like and isolationist (you don't get access to Tamera as a "normal person", you need an invitation from an inhabitant and I think also several inhabitants have to approve of your being invited.)"
-
Dire straits?
Another piece of news I found today:
http://www.igf-online.org/?id=513
IGF stands for Institute for Global Freedom Work, a project operated by Tamera which itself was founded by ZEGG. The message reads as follows:
"Urgent! Support for Manitonquat!
We received an urgent appeal to support our long-term friend Manitonquat. The story teller and spiritual teacher of the Wampanoag Indians as well as co-initiator of the Rainbow Gatherings needs USD 6,400 (approx EURO 4,888) urgently and quickly. If not, he will lose the premises for his modern tribe of Indians and non-Indians.
Manitonquat needs USD 6,400 within a week to pay the rates for the mortgage on his premises on which he and others live in America. They are in arears with two payments, and the bank threatens to confiscate the property and cancel the mortgage if the money is not paid within a week. For Manitonquat, this means the loss of all his reserves and also his old age security and his works.
He donates all the money he earns from seminars and events to the charitable organisation he founded. Manitonquat, Ellika and his former wife who is the president of that organisation do not have any financial reserves to prevent the loss of the property. Therefore, we ask everybody for support. Every little sum helps! And many small amounts soon will add up to the entire sum. Perhaps someone can even imagine to give part of the amount as a loan.
All those who are willing to participate please write an e-mail to ramona@ramonasbuchladen.de and annouce the sum you are willing to give or directly give the money to me. Everything else will get sorted out per email. Please act quickly - I would like to be able to give Manitonquat the news on Thursday, Nov 30, 2006. Donations coming in later will of course be welcome, too. Thank you for your support!
About Manitonquat: Manitonquat is a story teller of the Wampanoag Indians, but he also had a career in white culture, was an actor and director and an assistant professor at university. He discovered the culture of his ancestors anew and became a bridge between cultures. Not only at university, but also with his books in which he teaches the Indian world view and makes it
comprehensible for white people and through his commitment in building communities and through his annual camps. With his healing work in prisons he helps Indian inmates to build up links with their cultural roots and to find their identity again. In Tamera, he is known as a friend for many years and is part of the board of trustees which presently comes into being."
Apparently those people at www.international-camp.de who are in the know did not quite pass on their knowledge about Talbot's wrong claims of Wampanoag ethnicity to Tamera? The above text, published only recently at the end of November 2006, also speaks of an even inforced involvement of Talbot with Tamera. Please also note that the text mentions that the endangered property was the home of a "modern tribe of Indians and non-Indians". I especially like the wording his tribe.

Tansi;
I think that many people do not know that Reserves, established under the Indian Act in Canada cannot be mortgaged or sold and are the common property of the particular First Nation. If a property of this individual has a mortgage, then it is not lands set aside as a Reserve, under the Indian Act.
Must be a pretty expensive piece of property though, if the mortgage payments are $3,200 per month!

the following answer to Jonus/Jonas of the camp organising team at the forum at http/www.indianerma gazin.de:
"@Jonus / Jonas
So just for the record, you say re your knowledge of Talbot not being Wampanoag, but white:
In fact I did not think it was necessary to shout the fact from all rooftops as it is insignificant[ /quote]
In plain words: the others may well continue to believe he is authentic?
Doesn't do any harm, does it?
Well, it won't harm the business, right. There might be some harm done, on the other hand, if and when this 'marginality' got spread. What you do is at least dishonest advertising, but there are also ways to phrase this much clearer.
As we can see in a recent info at http://www.igf- online.org/ ?id=513 Mr Talbot even founded a "modern tribe of Indians and non-Indians" on his property.
So you wrote something critical re ZEGG and Tamera in your previous posts. Therefore you might be interested to learn that the above site announces that the "long-term friend" Mr Talbot will be sitting in the board of trustees presently established.
quote I.: If and when you know that Talbot is a white man, then why do you still advertise him as a Wampanoag elder at the website you linked?
answer Jonus: we're again at the point where you claim he doesn't have anything to do with the Wampanoag and I'm convinced of the contrary
No, we are at the point that you, in your posts here, admitted that you know that Talbot is not Wampanoag, but white. You did not answer my question.
Why does your group's website - which you are in charge of, i.e. you say it - continue to advertise Talbot as a Wampanoag elder? So, simply Wampanoag doesn't do, it's got to be a VIP - elder, keeper of the wisdom.
If it is merely an insignificant fact, then why is Talbot still getting advertised as an elder and keeper of the Wampanoag's wisdom? There certainly is no harm in mentioning an insignificant fact.
[quote Jonus] Well, I know English fairly well and Italian all right ...
Knowing languages is always useful, and I am glad to hear that your English is fairly well and your Italian all right. I am just slightly surprised why you replied the following to the person who spotted the entry at NAFPS and inquired about it with you:
[quote Jonas] ... I would say several things to the entry in that forum. 1. Could you perhaps try and do a halfways decent translation? I just about understood it, but it is rather long and complicated  [/quote]
Now, isn't it a bit daring of you to then go and judge translations and label them "aggressive" ? But sorry, your English is "fairly well". So is mine. Then how about continuing this discussion over at NAFPS? People there will certainly be interested in hearing which ethnic affiliations are marginalities, why shouting from rooftops is not appropriate, and who is in a position and authorised to do what and what not. You can even talk to persons from various ndn peoples there and discuss with them what they need to care
f***-all about.
In one of your postings you mentioned you wanted additional speakers at the summer camp to educate the audience - well, people at NAFPS are very nice and will gladly help and give truthful information about their respective cultures. They also happen to be pretty modest and certainly won't ask more in the way of payment than Mr Talbot - what did you say he got, EURO 50 for two weeks? The prices you charge, as I noticed, do amount to EURO 480 for an adult for 2 weeks, 2 adults with up to 3 children will pay EURO 660 for two weeks, or 210 and 330 respectively for just one week. Since you say you are only 17, it's somewhat less expensive for you: people between 18 and 25 will pay EURO 252 for two and 126 for one week, and please do bring your own tent, tipi, or trailer.
So, please do make it over to NAFPS, we'd be glad to welcome you there.
----
And since we know Talbot's followers are monitoring this site, I'll give them an answer right now.
I'm planning to do a speaking tour of Europe once again this summer, in May and June. I'll probably be in Germany in early June, though the exact plans are not certain.
I'd be glad to speak to Talbot's followers at their camp and try to explain why what they're doing is not only wrong but considered deeply racist by virtually all NDNs.
Just as during last summer, most of the fees I make will go to a charity for Native kids, the Albuquerque Indian Center.
Maybe Talbot's followers would like to actually do some good for Native people, instead of just exploiting them for their fantasies and saying "So F***ing What?!" to Native objections?
Maybe, maybe not. My experience has been that most European Nuagers are naive and uninformed rather than deliberately evil. We'll see which the camp organizers are when they give us their answer.

Up until today, Dec 12 2006, the German wikipedia entry on the Wampanoag carried a paragraph on Francis Talbot:
"Manitonquat "He who tells stories about the spirit" (English: "Medicine Story"), born 1929, member of the Assonet band of the Wampanoag tribe, studied at Cornell University/New York, was an actor, author, director, and had his own theatre. In 1970 he discovered his roots and began to learn from the elders of the Wampanoag. Later on he began to travel and teach. He taught "The Way of the Circle" to prisoners and youths in North America. Today, he teaches Indian culture and shamanic techniques and shamanic rituals in Europe . Since 1994, he has been leading seminars on sweatlodges, talking stick, and story telling."
This paragraph was deleted today after the author of the article had been informed that Francis Talbot is not a member of the Wampanoag and had been forwarded one of the postings of his follower (cf. above). The reason given for the deletion reads: "Manitonquat is no Wampanoag."
In the discussion to the Wampanoag entry, the author of the posting today wrote the following comment:
"Well, I wrote the forum entry quoted above, and if I had reason to believe it would be mentioned as a source, I certainly had phrased it differently. I assumed I was communicating with persons who hold information and opinion in high esteem and who aren't concerned with arguing 'on principle'. I would also like to add that the accusations against Manitonquat are based on mere speculation, I did not see any source which proved that he "exploits" Indian culture(s) in any way without having asked or without being authorised." Sorry, my english is not so good, so I only send you an email from Manitonquat. I think, this makes everything clear.
„I don't know where this stuff comes from. It seems to
be an insidious mixture of unfounded rumors and false
conjectures and guilt by association with others they
condemn. Like all hate mail, the attacks are
anonymous, no evidenced is presented, no accusers
identified. No one confronts me; the people don't
know me or anyone I know. It feels like the old
McCarthy era where reputations were destroyed by
unknown whisperers. I would like to know how you
became aware of it. Our people would like to trace it
and refute it, as I believe there are well-meaning
people who put this out believing what they heard must
be true - without confirmation.
The truth can easily be found if anyone took the time
to investigate. The correct source, of course, would
be my own tribe. Here's some history: when an
organization here in the northeast connected to AIM
did confront me 25 years ago, I demanded they bring
their charges to a council of our leaders. It was one
of the largest meetings ever held at the Mashpee
tribal council. They presented their case, I showed
documents from the source they named which completely
refuted their charges. I was strongly supported by
all our chiefs and medicine people, and the Supreme
Sachem (head chief) angrily denounced that
organization's leaders and told them he knew my work
and it was good.
Though they lost, some of those in that organization
said they would keep after me. Only one of them, the
vice president, Big Toe, a Narragansett elder, took up
my challenge and investigated. He came for a weekend
and learned all we do and then resigned from that
organization saying they had lied to him. He was even
thinking of joining us and is still a good friend.
But over the years since then I would hear things
sometimes, people who don't know me attacking behind
my back. No one ever faced me, no one ever
investigated. I was hurt. I kept telling my dear
friend Slow Turtle, the Supreme Medicine Man of our
people, with whom I worked closely, and he always said
I should forget it, not give them any attention or
energy. He was probably right, but it hurt and made
me angry.
I believe the remaining leaders of that organization,
members of AIM, kept the attacks alive and I was put
on an AIM black list (together with some other good
people like Black Elk and Sun Bear, and probably some
true phonies as well, but I wouldn't waste my time
with that). And still I was never confronted
directly, although a couple of sponsors cancelled
appearances because they didn't want controversy. Too
bad, but I never blamed any of them. The sister of
the leader of that organization kept his hatred alive
after he died and it affected a young man of my own
band who visited their band. Without confronting me
he told other young men in Mashpee who now think badly
of me without knowing me at all or what I do.
Some even began to insinuate that I might not be
Wampanoag, even though, unknown to them, a genealogy
had been done in my band that proved my heritage (I
did not ask for or want a genealogy done, nor would I
ask for anyone else's proof of their heritage, I would
only take their word), even though my family appears
clearly in the Indian census (Earle Reports) of the
mid-nineteenth century, even though I was the official
medicine man of the Assonet Band, working closely with
Slow Turtle and the Mashpee medicine man
gkisedtanamoogk, rebuilding our traditional tribal
ways.
The older people who were there 30 years ago when I
was helping to re-establish our spiritual ways in
Mashpee and then rebuild our Assonet Band, those still
alive, know me and remember. Too many are gone now,
and most of the new youth do not know me and a few, I
fear, are swayed by things they have heard.
A man in the prison circle this morning said, "I don't
judge a man by what he says, but by what he does. You
have been coming to us every week in every weather for
years and have helped me change my life. Where are
those who talk about you? We never see them. Your
actions show us what is true and we know your heart."
One statement was that I use the prison circles to get
funds. That is truly funny. I wish I knew how to get
funding, but the fact is we have none except my own
support paid out of the legitimate work I do. Where
is all this money I am supposed to be bilking the
people out of? I wish they would visit me in my
little 3-room house I built myself in the woods with
no running water, a 15 year old car and a wardrobe
out of the Salvation Army. I live simply with few
needs, but I have put myself so much in debt trying to
support the prison program and the Nature School, that
it keeps me awake worrying. All my savings for my old
age are gone. But now I hear from people everywhere
who love and believe in me and offer help, and I am
hoping we will survive this crisis and go on.
It would be easy for anyone to contact the Director of
the Commission on Indian Affairs in Boston, who is
Slow Turtle's son. He could tell them the truth about
me and about our Wampanoag people. But no one does
that. It bothers me that this website offers two
negative reviews of my books and none of the many
positive ones. These critical reviews were not made
by anyone who knows the ways of our people in the
northeast, or anything about the Wampanoag. I have
glowing statements about my books from Supreme Sachem
Drifting Goose, Wampanoag scholar Dr. Helen Attaquin,
and my chief, Windsong Blake.
After the first attack 25 years ago, Chief Windsong
gave me a supportive letter to show anyone who
questioned me. No one ever did to my face, and
eventually after years of carrying it around with me I
lost the letter. I don't want to bother my people
with this stuff. They've had to put up with it for
all these years and it makes me feel bad, even though
I am not to blame.
There are a lot of really important things that we
need to have unity on and work on together. The earth
is in jeopardy, thousands of species of our relatives
are becoming extinct, we are destroying our forests,
losing our topsoil, polluting our water and air. We
are fighting each other blindly, abusing and
neglecting our children and our elders, destroying
community, making the rich richer and the poor poorer.
What is needed is not more hatred, more separation,
but more understanding, more listening to each other,
finding our common causes and supporting them and each
other.???
Maybe you can contact him: medicinestory@yahoo.com, or the „Director of the Commission on Indian Affairs in Boston“.
-
Wouldn't a Directory of Indian Affairs have a .gov email address????? Certainly it wouldn't be a yahoo address. Just my 2c.
-
"Good people" like Sun Bear?? Well, Sun Bear real namre Vincent La Duke was really Indian, but he was also a real fraud.
-
Loissa, the very fact that he had you do this for him, rather than come here himself, that's a common tactic of frauds. They tend to want to appear "too spiritual" for politics, which to them (but not actual Native elders) is a dirty word.
Talbot does his best to avoid answering any questions. Along the way, he is sounding very paranoid when claims a Vast Conspiracy against him involving people that none of us have ever heard of.
"Like all hate mail, the attacks are anonymous, no evidenced is presented, no accusers identified."
That's amazing, four lies in one sentence. We've always been very open about who we are and we presented evidence *from the words of Talbot's own followers*. We don't "hate" him, we present evidence he's a fraud and a liar.
"I would like to know how you became aware of it. Our people would like to trace it and refute it."
Simple. The sources are *your own followers* as well as every Native activist I've ever encountered who knew who you were.
So if we hear of you trying to track down and punish the followers of yours who admitted the truth, it will just show you to be using cultlike tactics.
"Here's some history: when an organization here in the northeast connected to AIM did confront me 25 years ago,"
Talbot is doing exactly what he accuses others of. He's not giving any names, just accusing anonymous people without evidence.
"I demanded they bring their charges to a council of our leaders. It was oneof the largest meetings ever held at the Mashpee tribal council."
What? Talbot is now claiming to be Mashpee? Before, it was simply Wampanoag, then it changed to the Gay Head Band, then Assonet.
"I showed documents from the source they named which completely refuted their charges."
Again, Talbot is doing exactly what he accuses others of. No naming of sources, so no one can check.
"Though they lost, some of those in that organization said they would keep after me. Only one of them, the vice president, Big Toe, a Narragansett elder, took up my challenge and investigated. He came for a weekend and learned all we do and then resigned from that organization saying they had lied to him. He was even thinking of joining us and is still a good friend."
This guy?
http://www.v-j-enterprises.com/wolfsong.html
"BIG TOE (Narragansett/Delaware):
Big Toe states that the crystal skulls were made by a society that lived in harmony, that lived very close to natural universal laws. The people who made the crystal skulls understood lasers and higher technology much better than we do today as we use our own advanced technology for destructive purposes. We can't even imagine the level of which this society had attained. They received their knowledge of the cosmic laws from the Stars, because that is where we all originate from and who was responsible for constructing the crystal skulls as a reminder of our cosmic connection."
Not the most credible guy. Whether he actually is an elder or not, his judgement is at least sometimes not very good. He works not only with frauds who endorsed a fraudulent crystal skull, he also did a CD with another fraud.
http://www.bmastudios.com/id19.html
"A meditational CD with the words and wisdom of Narragansett Elder Big Toe and featuring Kam Night Chase"
"I believe the remaining leaders of that organization, members of AIM, kept the attacks alive and I was put
on an AIM black list (together with some other good people like Black Elk and Sun Bear, and probably some
true phonies as well, but I wouldn't waste my time with that)."
Like Deb pointed out, Laduke was as phony as three dollar bill, and Wallace Black Elk had become an exploiter.
"The sister of the leader of that organization kept his hatred alive after he died and it affected a young man of my own band who visited their band. Without confronting me he told other young men in Mashpee who now think badly of me without knowing me at all or what I do."
Once more, Talbot is making anonymous accusations so they can't be checked.
Loissa, why not ask him to have the courage to back up what he says, so we can check if they are lies or not?
And once again, none of these are any of the same sources we've been using.
"Some even began to insinuate that I might not beWampanoag, even though, unknown to them, a genealogyhad been done in my band that proved my heritage"
So how does he explain his own followers admitting he's a white imposter?
"even though I was the official medicine man of the Assonet Band"
Yes, yet one more of his ever changing claims of who he was. So far he's claimed to be:
Mashpee
Wampanoag (generic, no band claimed)
Gay Head Band
And now Assonet Band
"The older people who were there 30 years ago when I was helping to re-establish our spiritual ways in
Mashpee and then rebuild our Assonet Band, those still alive, know me and remember. Too many are gone now, and most of the new youth do not know me and a few, I fear, are swayed by things they have heard."
Very convenient, claiming people who know "the truth" are gone. Peters has passed away.
"One statement was that I use the prison circles to get funds. That is truly funny. I wish I knew how to get funding, but the fact is we have none except my own support paid out of the legitimate work I do."
Iron Lodge has been trying for years to get the state to quit paying Talbot money for his prison ministry, and have a long list of complaints of the damage he's done to inmates.
"Where is all this money I am supposed to be bilking the people out of?"
Let's see...Talbot makes regular trips to Europe and is trying to start his "own tribe".
"It would be easy for anyone to contact the Director of the Commission on Indian Affairs in Boston, who is
Slow Turtle's son. He could tell them the truth about me and about our Wampanoag people."
No one should be fooled by the official sounding name.
http://www.mass.gov/dhcd/components/Ind_Affairs/default.htm
"The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Commission on Indian Affairs (MCIA) was created by the legislature in 1974...The fundamental role of MCIA is to assist Native American individuals, tribes and organizations in their relationship with state and local government agencies."
State recognition of tribes or individuals, as we've noted many times, is useless, or even dangerous. It's often used to make groups or individuals appear legit when they aren't.
"It bothers me that this website offers two negative reviews of my books and none of the many
positive ones."
Why would we? The positive ones came from white Nuagers.
So Talbot is monitoring this website? Nice of him to admit that. Again, why is he afraid to come here? Why send a white European Nuage follower of his instead?
"I have glowing statements about my books from Supreme Sachem Drifting Goose, Wampanoag scholar Dr. Helen Attaquin, and my chief, Windsong Blake."
Once more, claiming endorsements from the deceased. Attaquin has passed on.
"After the first attack 25 years ago, Chief Windsong gave me a supportive letter to show anyone who
questioned me. No one ever did to my face, and eventually after years of carrying it around with me I
lost the letter."
Pretty convenient.
Sorry, Loissa, but Talbot hasn't said anything but anonymous accusations and mostly claiming endorsements from people who are no longer alive.
He is also very conveniently leaving out one of the worse accusations against him. More than a few former female followers report he pressured or demanded they have sex with him in exchange for ceremony.
And no, for this charge we won't name names. It'd be immoral to demand we name victims of what comes pretty close to being sexual assault.
He also needs to explain his ties to a cult like ZEGG that abuses women and endorses rape.
-
the mashpee have just gottetn preliminary federal recognition. their rolls must be in top shape i would think. i'll contact them and see whether they endorse talbot.

This is, what I found in the german forum: http://indianermagazin.de/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=180&whichpage=5, someone named Aberth asked Burne Stanley-Peters, President of Mass. Center for Native American Awareness about Manitonquat:
<<I like to get information about a man named Francis Talbot aka Manitonquat aka Medicine Story who said of himself that he is an elder of the Wampanoag native of the Assonet Band. Short time ago i've heard that hi is a fraud, not a native but just a white man, who calls himself an elder and storyteller of that tribe. So please, is it somehow possible to check this information?>>
Hello:
Medicine Story is a legitimate Native person from the Wampanoang Nation of the Assonet Band here in Massachusestts. We have heard stories about him over the years but they are not true. He is a Native Person and we are in contact with him all the time and he knew and worked very closely with my late husband, Slow Turtle.
Thank you for your inquiry.
Burne Stanley-Peters
President
Mass. Center for
Native American Awareness>>
If this is not the answer, which makes everything clear, I don't know, what I shall think about you.
Another thing is: I am an adult and I am able to decide by myself, when and if I poste something in a forum. Nobody says to me, what I have to do!

http://www.avaloncity.com/MedicineStory/SprtSexuality1.html (http://www.avaloncity.com/MedicineStory/SprtSexuality1.html)
I did notice this website describes Mr Talbot's workshops on Spiritual sexuality as being for "Allies of
Native women " which I would guess means he is teaching a male audience and not a female audience . A female audience would be more of a concern . The course description sounds a bit like basic life skills , such as learning to make healthy choices ,and there is no hint of anything "hands on " . So I suppose it is possible some of Mr Talbots activities might have been misinterpreted . ( though implying any of this is "traditional teaching" is very questionable ,and some of the people he appears to claim as friends such as Sun Bear , (and others :o ) don't help his reputation)
Even if Mr Talbot is recognized by the Wampanoag people , and some of these other concerns are a misunderstanding , I have to wonder if charging a negotiable $500 a day for "Spiritual Teachings" is acceptable within Wampanoag traditions .
As I have always heard it , advertising and charging money for anything claimed to be traditional Spiritual teachings is considered offensive, degrading and exploitive . I don't know anything about Wampanoag traditions and culture , but as a lot of what he is teaching for a fee looks to be borrowed from other Native cultures , I guess the objections can come from other Native cultures , which do find this offensive .

Loissa, why would you think what one member of one charity thinks would be all the answers we need? Especially when that charity sponsors Talbot's efforts to make money off of speaking about spirituality?
The list of groups that say Talbot is a fraud is much longer than those who think he's legit.
The list of people who say he is not Wampanoag includes the inner circle of Talbot's own followers.
Jonas, for example, says he is white and they all have known it for a long time.
He also says "So f---ing what?" to the question of whether he is a fraud or not, or his teachings are false or not.
Talbot asking you to come here says nothing bad about you, only about him.
Once again, I have to ask why both you and Talbot are avoiding the most important questions?
What about the accusations he abuses women, demands sex in exchange for ceremony?
Why does he work with ZEGG, an abusive cult who think there is nothing wrong with raping women?
If you can deny the own words of Talbot's own people, and if you and Talbot both avoid answering the charges of sexual abuse, then I know exactly what to think.
-
I hope Loissa or other people in Germany are still reading this thread. I'm starting to hear from people who know about Talbot's prison ministry. One person's story:
"Some actual prisoners that he works/worked with. All of them are carded and were/are treated like crap by Talbot. He belittles them and has complete disregard to the fact that they were actually raised in their respective cultures and that they actually know what they're talking about.
Also, there was a lodge recently constructed in Berlin NH by Talbot's brother (a white man who goes by the name of Raven. His actual name is Jim Farnum). The lodge was ridiculously tall and had some sort of bizarre antenna sticking out of the top.
An enrolled Mi'kmaq (Joey Barlow, enrolled at Indian Island NB, he comes from a family of chiefs and ws raised by some very significant spiritual leaders) lowered the lodge by three feet a couple of weeks ago
after Talbot gave the inmates permission to stand in the lodge."
Found a site where Talbot and Farnum are selling ceremonies as part of workshops.
http://www.earthlands.org/learningtheland.htm

-
More and more information coming out, from Talbot's ties to questionable groups to respected elders objecting to him to the damage he does to prisoners.
One account.
-----
"Talbot and Farnum attend the circle at a prison in Gardner Massachusetts where he allows a pseudo-Cheyenne warrior society to occur. They have a head chief as well as chiefs for the four directions, a peacekeeper and dogsoldiers.
An enrolled Ho-chunk Sundancer was incarcerated in two facilities in NH and was treated with complete disregard and disrespect by Talbot which of course led to the non-Indian inmates treating him in the same
manner. The Sundancers name is Billy Sun and he comes from a family of Sundance Chiefs.
All herbs and reading materials that the prisons in NH receive are donated and Talbot nor his organization supply them. I find it interesting that Talbot goes into the prisons every week when he is in Europe a
great part of the year selling his interpretation of ceremony to gullible white folks. His brother Jim Farnum was recently suspended from the NH prison system.
An inmate by the name of James Mascetta, enrolled Abenaki, was incarcerated at the facility in Concord NH. When he would oppose Talbots teachings Talbot would become irate and belittle him as well. He
continuously attempted to divert the attention of the other inmates away from Mascetta's questions and accusations instead of answering him honestly.
Another inmate who wishes to remain annonymous (I can put you in touch with him) attended a number of Talbots sweats outside of the prison after his release and refuses to attend again due to the manner in which Talbot handled himself with a distraught and vulnerable woman.
NO respect is ever given to the ancestors of the northern facilities he attends. He allows the inmates to conduct a psuedo-Lakota circle, no eastern woodlands songs are encourged, no encouragement to learn how to pay respect for the ancestors of those areas.
The sacred sexuality course is FOR WOMEN not for their male allies. He believes he can do this because he feels he has 'elk medicine' which allows him to interact with women in an 'intimate' manner.
At a gathering a number of years ago a respected holyman from Canada was in attendance. Mr. Talbot was extremely upset that this individual's teachings countered what Talbot teaches and would not even approach the holyman. When he learned he was going to be confronted by the holyman he left the gathering.
If Talbot is so highly respectable, why is it that he would bring nude pictures of his wife into an institution where she occasionally attends?"
-
More about the people Talbot associates with:
"Medicine Story is using Sunbear to legitimize himself? His ex-wife Emmy stated at a Dance New England gathering several years ago that Sunbear sexually assaulted two young girls at one of his summer encampments. Supposedly Medicine Story talked the girls' parents out of pressing charges.
To my knowledge none of the members of the Native Circles that he provides services for are even Native. Actual Natives that are incarcerated in the institutions he services are ostracised from the circles because they disagree with his teachings.
How is it that he can conduct Native American sweats when there are over 500 Nations some with and some without sweat ceremonies and each ceremony is individualistic to that particular Nation?
If he was so concerned about bringing back the ceremonies of the Assonet then why are his ceremonies a mishmash of a variety of Nations?"
----
About Big Toe, supposedly a Narragansett elder that Talbot points to as an endorsement:
"I asked around about that Toe guy supposedly of AIM. I have a few friends who are Narragansett and their opinion of him isn't particularly high being that he's into some pretty weird stuff as opposed to following, promoting and teaching his own culture."

Hello
This was a PM i send to educatedindian. As he wish, i make my pm public
Hello
First, i've to excuse myself for my bad english. I came from Germany and are interested to become clear with myself about this situation about Francis Talbot.
I've heard from an half-blooded native, that they were strongly surpressed by the pure-blooded natives so i wounder, if the fact, that Francis Talbot is not pure-blooded native (of course, his grandmother was a pure-blooded native, about more native ancistors i was not informed) may be a reason, why he was attacked so strongly.
My knowledge about the different native cultures is nearly like nothing but i was still open for learning more about it.
But how can i trust information i can't see or feel by my own?
Everybody say that the internet wasa fine possibility to learn but how can i be sure, that the information i get from the internet were correct?
You say, that Francis Talbot is a fraud and a lot of other people say the same, but what, if you and they are the frauds?
I know, you think, that i was rude but i was just unsure about whom i can trust and whom not.
I've met Francis first time in 2000 on a weekend meeting for wich i paid about 30€ for material like firewood and food and things like that. after that i was on three of the big summer camps an two more weekend workshops.
And at no time he tried to sell us native wisdom or rituals, never tried to make one of us (so far i can say that) to a "shaman" of wich i know it was not from the american natives but from siberia in Russia, or everything else.
What he tries to show us, was a way to come together and live in a co supporting comunity, to live again with each other an came out of isolation. He tried to show us s.th. about the mechanism of supression between the genders and the problems resulting of that supression.
And what he say about love is not, to feel free to love but that it is important to be free in our mind so we can freely give love without fear or be influenced by the sexism showed in the modern civilisation.
I know. that all listens realy confused and thats exactly i feel at the moment. So i will end at these point and be curious about your answer.
Your sincerly
Aberth
The earth can exist without man but we can't exist without her. So, please, remember my words and do everything that all following generations can also live in this world.
And this was his answer
Hello Aberth,
First, I would prefer that any other email between us be either in public or at my usual email, educated_indio@yahoo.com. There is no reason we can't talk about this in public. It would be good for you to hear other Native opinions, and if you are afraid for other members of Talbot's group to know you have questions, that does not say anything good about his people.
Natives object to Talbot solely because he is a fraud and exploiter who harms many people. I'm mixeblood myself, and so are many of the members of NAFPS.
You asked "How can I trust information I can't see or feel on my own?" That is a terrible way to judge things. After all, to a heroin addict, heroin feels good, and doctors and medical textbooks are not things you can feel.
The way to trust information is simply to ask what the majority of peoples of that culture say, and we say Talbot is a fraud. Even his own followers know he is a white man pretending to be Native, they just don't care because he caters to their fantasies about Natives.
As for me, you could easily check what others have to say about us, or find out who we are.
You say he never tried to sell you Native wisdom, but the fact is you would not have listened to him if he did not pretend to be Indian. What he sold you (for cash) he passed off as being from Native cultures, when it has nothing to do with them.
And if you look again at the thread, yes, he does sell ceremonies.
Unless you object, I would like to repost what we've said here on the thread for all to see.

Someone emailed me this account of meeting him:
"I knew there was something wrong with him. I was involved years ago with a group he runs out of his place in New Hampshire. He charges money for everything that was my first hint. Then he offers sweats but they were co-ed. I was taught that sweats were never to be co-ed or offered to people other than full bloods. I also learned that women have moon lodges.
He didn't charge money for his sweats but said you had to donate a blanket and sage for the sweat. I was very uncomfortable, uneasy the whole time I was in the group. My intuition told me to get away and stay away from this man and his group. I will admit I did buy his book Back to Creation. Yes he did claim to be Wampanoag.
I can't believe that he is still operating. He sure has made his money believe me, from this. He has the most beautiful place up there an lots of big wigs give him money for his work. The organization that I work with here in my town is devoted to Indigenous people but mostly we help Native women who are abused or raped. They are always looking for other Native people or groups to be a source for outreach to help our clients. I am glad you gave me that link so I can make sure I warn the group before they hear about him and think of contacting him. Thanks again."
-
I wonder about people who will believe a fraud over Native people whom he is teaching. I have heard while full-bloods don't like mix-bloods, the Native people have lost their traditions, they are jealous of me, those people are just making up lies, and my follows believe me.
It is wrong to teach people lies, some people are so needy that these people take advantage of them. It is wrong and it is fraud.
-
Good point, it's good to them till it backfires. I seen a couple that didn't go well. One was a argument over a belief that the person was going to heal his pancreatic cancer. It didn't and it got nasty. Of course the person stated they never said that in the beginning, just they would help them "cope" with it. Sometimes these people are not only needy they are desperate, and will grab at anything.
-
I have a friend who has had a fantasy about meeting a wise NDN teacher since she was in high school. She is over 40 now. And when I point out someone is a fraud and why, she will argue with me. She is so tied to her fantasy, that she does not want to know someone is a fraud. I think quite a few of the fraud followers are like her. And there are so many books in the nuage bookstores that promote this kind of fantasy.
-
I know of some young white women who used to hang out with Talbot. This was when they were in their late teens or early twenties, in the early to mid 1980s. Again, it was the, "I want a Native teacher" thing. I don't know much about what happened with them, as I was not close with any of these people.
I may have met Talbot, if he came with the Wampanoags to any of the Big Mountain actions we had on the Boston Common in the eighties. Then again, most of what I heard about him was from white Newagers and hippies who went up to events he was doing at... I think it was called "Another Place" in New Hampshire. These New Hampshire, workshop culture things, were events for a pretty thoroughly white audience. I'd be stunned if any actual NDNs attended.
Edit: Checked around online to find a picture of him. Found this: http://www.circlecamp.dk/index.php?id=57,0,0,1,0,0 No, I don't recall seeing him at any of the Big Mountain actions. Doesn't sound like his scene.
Looks like he's having regular events in Germany, Italy, Sweden and Denmark: http://www.circleway.org/schedule.html
This one also mentions Austria and Poland: http://www.weg-des-kreises.at/etermine.htm
Here's one where they offer "visionquests": http://www.circlecamp.dk/index.php?id=47,0,0,1,0,0
And 'sweatlodge': http://www.circlecamp.dk/index.php?id=73,0,0,1,0,0
They only tell you how much it costs after you register: http://www.circlecamp.dk/index.php?contact_sign_in
"To sign up to the camp you have to fill in the following spaces, where after an e-mail with the given informations automaticly will be sent to Manon. Then you will receive a bil via e-mail, in which the amount you have to pay and all the bank informations will be. When we have received your payment, you will receive a receipt that will function as a ticket to the camp."
This one tells you the price up front: http://www.weg-des-kreises.at/egebuehr.htm
"grownups Euro 295.-
teenagers (12 - 18years) 150.-
children (5 - 12years) 90.-
children under 5 free
"The fees are used for paying the rent, overnight stay, lunch, organisation and childcare. The surplus goes to Manitonquat and Ellika, helping them in their work with teenagers, prisoners and in the reservation."
Uh, what reservation?

Francis Talbot AKA Medicine Story has an entire chapter in Steven McFadden’s book, Profiles in Wisdom: Native Elders Speak About the Earth.
See the Amylee thread – it has one chapter by legitimate Native elder, Tom Porter, and the rest is just a showcase for plastic medicine people Dhyani Ywahoo, Twylah Nitsch, Sun Bear, Oh Shinnah, Amylee, Hunbatz Men …
The book that I have in the library is published by Bear&Company out of Santa Fe.
Medicine Story was one of the frauds highlighted in McFadden’s book Profiles in Wisdom
He’s been associated with and was discredited long ago, but this doesn’t stop new agers from believing in him.
Chapter 7 is here:
http://www.fraudspotting.bravehost.com/SURpage1.html
It’s followed by the Chapter on Sun Bear.
Some of his many New Age books are:
Changing the World
Grandaughters of the Moon
The Circle Way
Return to Creation
Ending Violent Crime
Children of the Morning Light
Many of his books are published by Bear Tribe Publishing, the same publisher that published Sun Bear’s books.
In Profiles in Wisdom, Talbot claims that he is the “powwah, or spiritual leader, and the minatou, or keeper of the lore for the Assonet band of Wampanoag Nation.??? (McFadden, p 115). He claims to be a member of the Mettonokit Community in New Hampshire. (McFadden, p. 127)
He claims he inherited his grandfather’s name and his name if Francis Story Talbot.
“My grandfather was born down in Dighton, Massachusetts, and I go down to the Dighton powwow every year now and do ceremonies at the Dighton Council Rock, and sort of pay my respects to my grandfather and his background there. His people came from the Pokonoket community and the old Watuppa reservation near Fall River, which the city of Fall River took away from our people around the turn of the century.??? (McFadden, p. 116)
He used to work in the theatre, so that explains his proclivity for flim flam.
He’s been going to Rainbow gathering and spreading his manure since the early 70s.
He has a very white, liberal view of what a Native person is. He covers his ignorance by going on and on about the 60s, environmentalism, the Rainbow gatherings … He uses a lot of catch phrases to appeal to gullible white college educated crowd like “sustainability??? , global warming and the greenhouse effect, the great circles of life, and throws around passages from Black Elk Speaks.
What is surprising is that he claims to have been the editor of Akwesasne Notes in the mid 70s.
Since he’s given a tribe, it should be very easy to check enrollment status:

Webmaster E-mail: Pineese@pokanoket.org
He also runs a fraudulent Non-Profit called Mettanokit (not on Guidestar)
With the economy the way it is and with a new administration coming in, now is a really good time to report non profit fraud to the state attorney general. I think he operates in New Hampshire, but by now he’s probably global.
FURTHER EVIDENCE OF HIS PLASTICITY
MEDICINE STORY’s CLAIMS:
In his pay-to-pray workshops, he claims to be a “Native American elder, spiritual leader and Keeper of the Lore for the Assonet band of the Wampanoag Nation in what we now call New Hampshire.???
Manitonquat (Medicine Story) claimed to work with someone called, Cjegkitoonuppa, or Slow Turtle (John Peters) who claims to be the “Massapowau for the People of the Morning Light.??? (McFadden, p. 201) and his daughter, Ramona. They both claimed they were Wampanoag elders while leading sweat lodges and medicine circles for the inmates of several New England prisons.
John Peters (Slow Turtle) is said to the executive director of the Massachusetts Commission on Indian Affairs (MCIA). And married to Brune Stanley who shared the executive directorship. (McFadden, p. 203)
It would be easy to check this.

They may or may not be legit elders who were fooled by Talbot.
This is from an old pamphlet:
“Please note the following words adapted and based on. Sweat lodge Workshop. A discussion of the purpose and some of the various forms of the sweat lodge ceremony and how it can be adapted to modern neo-Paganism. This will include logistical and safety considerations for running a lodge and a brief, but real, sweat lodge ceremony based on the teachings of Medicine Story, a Wampanoag elder. Bring two large towels, one to sit on and one to dry yourself with.. If you are wearing clothing, make it loose. Avoid Spandex. The lodges are "clothing optional". Any person present may choose to be clothed or unclothed, according to their own level of comfort. Anyone under 16 years of age must have written parental permission. The sweat area is not handicap accessible. However, we will try to make this experience available to all who care to attend. Additional cost for supplies, $5.00/person.???
There’s no date, place or contact info. It looks very New Age.
Can’t photo-copy it’s in special collection.
Talbot also runs Sweats and Vision Quests in Mundekulla Sweden

And he’s currently running sweats in Hawaii

"Native American Medicine Story and his wonderful wife Ellika! ... We will also have a sweat lodge, open stage, story telling, ceremonies
Dear family, those we know and those we have not yet met!!
February 16-22 2009 we have the opportunity to go deeper into community again with the
Native American Medicine Story and his wonderful wife Ellika! This time on the blossoming
and powerful island of Hawaii!! Right in paradise! The Hawaii-camp starts off the celebration
year of 2009 when Medicine Story turns 80.
Picture of Kalalau Valley, Kauai
During an exciting week we will live together in the thick green jungle at Coco’s – a course
and retreat center with a focus on organic holistic thinking, community and spirituality. In the
embrace of Mother Nature we create a safe circle where we can be ourselves fully, meet in
openness, heal, learn, and play. With the power of the volcanic island
and the ancient wisdom conveyed to us by Medicine Story we find a
more original way of living as human beings in harmony with each
other and with nature.
The talking circle will be our basic tool during the week. In the circle
everyone is seen and heard and all are equally important parts of the
whole. Together we have much wisdom and power that no one can
carry alone! The circle creates safety and gives us the chance to share
our deepest thoughts and feelings with the active listening and
closeness of all. We will feel more clearly who we really are and what
stops us from being ourselves! Old fears, thoughts and patterns that lie
in the way can be let out and healed in the circle. Every day we meet
with the whole camp in the great circle, as well as in smaller circles of
5-6 people. We also make use of the co-counseling method, which
essentially works as a mini circle made up of just two people.
Medicine Story 2008
Updated version Sept 30th 2008
Group talk during camp in Mundekulla, Sweden, July 2008
During the week we will listen to the wisdom of Medicine Story and see and feel where we
stand on questions like: What is a sustainable way of life? How do I want to live as a human
being on this earth? How do we live together as human beings? How can we be good leaders
for a better world? We will also have a sweat lodge, open stage, story telling, ceremonies,
singing, dancing and music. We get a tour of the area to visit people who have chosen to
move into nature to live more independently and self-supporting. If there is interest we can
together create special activities for children and teenagers. This
will be a magical week that we create together!
After camp there are possibilities to organize trips together to see
the beauty and power of Hawaii. Hawaii has incredible nature
with 11 different climate zones! We could see lava flowing out
into the sea, swim in hot springs and waterfalls, swim with
dolphins and turtles, enjoy the exotic jungle with magical fruits,
lie on a beach and drink coconut milk, and watch the stars from
the world’s highest mountain (counting from the bottom of the
sea) Mauna Kea! Naturally we might also take in the old Hula
tradition of singing, dancing and music. Those who want to can
try out Hawaiian massage - Lomi Lomi, and possibly see a
Kahuna – a Hawaiian shaman.
We warmly welcome you to an inner and outer adventure for life!
Ellika 2008
Updated version Sept 30th 2008
Organizers
The trip is organized by Camilla Klasson Måne and Kalle Grill. I, Camilla, have spent the last
three winters on Hawaii and I must say that the beautiful nature of the island and the people I
have met there have changed my life in magical way! I have also helped organize camps with
Medicine Story at Mundekulla course center in Småland, Sweden, where I work as a cook. It
feels amazing to have this chance to combine and unite these two strong powers. Kalle Grill is
a graduate student of philosophy and has taken part in many of Medicine Story’s camps. He
has also led talking circles in Stockholm, Sweden, where he lives.
Prices and practical information
The price of the camp is 2600 SEK or $400 and includes vegetarian breakfast, lunch and
dinner during the whole camp, as well as a spot to put up you tent. Rooms and bungalows are
available at extra cost. Children up to the age of 12 come for free. Teenagers aged 13-20 pay
1500 SEK or $230. To secure a place, a fee of 500 SEK or $80 should be paid to Kalle’s
account – account number 9150-327.113-9 in the Swedish bank Skandiabanken (Utlandsavd,
S-106 55 STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN), IBAN: SE03 9150 0000 0915 0317 8937 SWIFT/BIC:
SKIASESS. The trip to Hawaii you arrange yourself but we will of course give you tips and
advice! The closest airport is Hilo.
The camp starts Monday February 16th at 2pm and ends around 5pm Sunday the 22d. If you
travel far, we suggest you arrive at Coco’s the day before the camp to rest and get used to the
time difference. If you want to come even earlier camping at Coco’s is $15 a night.
To be able to plan and make neccessary payments we need you to sign up for the camp no
later than November 30
th
! However, if this reaches you later than that, please contact us!
The drive from Hilo airport to Coco’s is an hour and busses are rare. Together with Coco’s we
therefore offer transfer at a cost of $20.
Going to Hawaii is a long trip and we encourage all to stay at least two weeks on the island to
really have time to experience it!
Our thoughts on the camp’s economy
We want as many people as possible from all over the world to be able to join us at this camp!
We have therefore tried to keep the price as low as possible. As organizers we work for free
and make no profit (except that we do not pay the camp fee). ???We??? in this case means
Camilla, Kalle, and a few helpers from Hawaii. The fees go to pay for flights for Medicine
Story and Ellika, renting a car, renting the place, and foodstuffs. If there is a money surplus it
will go to aid Story’s and Ellika’s work with inmates in American and other prisons.

Slow Turtle died years ago. His son runs indian affairs now. Far as I know he supports Talbut as does Burne, Slow Turtle's widow. I don't have much respect for Indian Affairs, they are very questionable in their operations (like spending thousands of dollars on repats which cost little or nothing to do).
Mettanokit was disolved and is now under the umbrella of the Nature School.
Talbots association with Wahoo is superficial. He has however had Ed McGaa, Osheana (sp?), Sun Bear and may other exploiters at his gatherings. Kind of a funny side note, when he had Ed McGaa out to Mettanokit he stiffed McGaa on his fee lol. One exloiter screwing another :)
All of his books with the exception of Return to Creation are self-published at this point. Most of them are actually booklets.
His base in the US is in Greenville NH. He aslo has a residence in Denmark I believe.
Ramona Peters is NOT associted with Medicine Story. She is legit, is not an exploiter, is very low-profile and does not perform ceremony. She's an artist who makes traditional pottery.
His 'work' in the prisons is on going, I have posted about it before and Al has posted things for me in regard to this. Personally I think the most damaging work he is doing is in the prisons. dn inmates are ostracized from the circles and he fills the noon-indians heads with his non-traditional exploitive behavior.

Hello you people from NAFPS,
i do very much appreciate your intention, i understand your concern and agree completely with the attempt to protect cultures of native american people from selfish misuse for money making, especially by white folks. I am not native and not even american and most people you mention on your site i do not know. The one person on your listings which i know very well is Manitonquat / Medicine Story, and i will do my best to help you re-evaluate the offending claims you put up against this wonderful native american man.
(name and origin)
There seems to be some confusion about the ethnic belonging of Manitonquat / Medicine Story / Francis Story Talbot, originated in a false understanding of a young boy. You may have noticed, that it seems to be only this one boy that had denied FM Story Talbot's Wampanoag origins. The reason i suppose is, that the boy simply had been confused. Francis Story Talbot is of Wampanoag origin on his father's side and of English/Swedish origin on his mother's side. That he got a white man's name can hardly be blamed on him. Since he became a gifted storyteller of his tribe's lore, and since he dedicated his gift to healing, he received the Wampanoag name Manitonquat, which translates in English into Medicine Story - and by 'coincidence' his second name has been Story from birth on and Story he'd been called all his life...
Medicine Story by many sources is a honored member, elder and retired ceremonial leader of the Assonet band of the Wampanoag Nation, having worked closely with Slow Turtle, the Supreme Medicine Man of his people, as long as he had been around. When firstly, 29 years ago, accusations were brought up against Medicine Story, he got full support, backup and legitimization by the council of the chiefs and medicine people, among them the Supreme Sachem (head chief), of his tribe. For people of your assumed background i believe, it shall be manageable to check these assertions.
(prison project)
The prison work you seem to have been misinformed about by unknown sources, had been initiated by Slow Turtle and ever since proven to be very helpful for native and non native inmates likewise. (Slow Turtle insisted, and Manitonquat agreed, that although the purpose and form were for the native prisoners, it was not their way to turn away any serious seeker.) Manitonquat receives no funds from the government or other organizations for this incredible work, but to the contrary is he additionally working continuously to finance the project's expenses.
In a beautiful way he is earning the money to help people inside the prisons by helping people outside the prisons, which are able to express their appreciation of his doings in form of some money given.
(nature school)
Talking of money, the land, for which an emergency call was send around to save it, is the land of the former community in which Manitonquat had been living for many years, which, as you stated correctly, is not reservation land. When the community chose to break up, the land was sold to a project known as Nature School, doing great work with urban children suffering from nature deficits. When this project got into financial troubles, Manitonquat, who is also still living on the same piece of land, helped save the school by formally taking over the land onto his name, by that throwing himself into complete financial insecurity. The school still doesn't work cost-covering, so that Manitonquat is constantly trying to manage to even it out by his own earnings through book selling, holding lectures and giving workshops - additionally to keeping the prison project running. Please keep in mind that the man is 79 years old by now.
(money)
The claim he'd get money out of some kind of 'followers' for his own benefit is barely ridicolous. If there is a person on earth who doesn't go for money, for personal advantages, comfort and privileges, then it is Manitonquat. He'd act like Che Guevara in that regard, except he's nearing the 80 by now and we do care for the comfort and health of our honored elder and beloved grandfather and provide a chair and a blanket instead of letting him sit on the floor between us young folks... As he himself wonders, "Where is all this money i am supposed to be bilking the people out of? I wish they would visit me in my little 3-room house i built myself in the woods with no running water..."
Could it [the assumed money] be 'flowing' into the 'regular trips to Europe'? Well, the workshop schedule is carefully planned to minimize travel expenses, which are then raised via the workshops. Any leftover 'flows' into prison project and nature school.
The concrete handling of the financial side of any event in which Manitonquat participates, is up to the local organizers of the event and therefore differs from event to event. Beyond that, personally i've been witnessing Manitonquat insisting that a woman could attend a sweat lodge ceremony of his, which took place during a weekend workshop, where the woman had come only for the sweat and the organizers, out of a different conception, first had been wanting to send her away. Ceremonies are free of charge. Workshop fees are compounded of expenses for place, food, wood, travel etc, and a donation dedicated to the charity projects Manitonquat maintains or is involved with in the US. This is clear to the participants and they (we) freely choose this exchange.
Me, speaking for myself at the very least, i give whatever i can afford (which is not usually much, far not as much as i would like to), and happily i give it, because i know it will help providing the same precious thing, this opportunity for growth and healing which i'd been blessed by, through the healing presence and the teachings delivered by Manitonquat, for other people in similar need as well.
(teachings)
As having organized a few weekend workshops in Berlin during the past years, i can say, that money is no issue with Manitonquat. When people are wanting to listen to what he can teach, when they ask him to visit and be with them for a weekend or so, he likes to have paid the travel expenses, and sure he does appreciate to come out with some surplus due to paying the petrol for a few more trips to the several prisons throughout the country back in the states. Regardless these calculations, given of course he could reasonably make it, he'd come to hang out, when invited, and he'd share with us his experience, wisdom and love in a circle, showing us by example how sweet life can be.
And this, along with a few more characteristics, is what i'd been finding to be so universal throughout native american teachings, this, i'd found to be the beauty of native american art of living, as far as i may say so - not, that i'd be an expert. But i can tell that this is what the culture i am born into, and i don't feel belonging to, is lacking so desperately: the sense of joy and beauty, laughter and cheerful pleasure from the simple things, from the rain that softly drops on the roof, from the child playing in the grass, from the corn and the flower given so generously by our mother the earth...
Lacking is this culture respect for all things and all beings, an understanding that any pain which my brother suffers, hurts me, too, and every laughter my sister enjoys lets my spirit rise high, no matter if this is a human brother or a tree sister, a deer or a whale, a white or a black man or a brown or a yellow or a red child...
And lacking is this culture even the politeness to listen to each other, not to talk about the higher art of which, that kind of listening which between white people is best known through Momo, the little fiction girl invented by Michael Ende, that kind of listening, which seems so central to all or most native american cultures, at least as to my limited findings. That kind of listening, which seems so essential for human beings to live in peace with each other and themselves.
So, as you may have noticed, i got no grain of doubt about the authenticity of Manitonquats teachings, which he himself clearly refers to his Wampanoag heritage and to the teachings of many other native american elders he'd been visiting and listening to many years ago, before he was becoming an elder himself. And a fundamental part of his teachings is, that the way of listening, the way of the circle and of respecting, giving thanks and appreciation to creation are not exclusively native american ways, but are universal to all human beings - these are our original instructions, written in our genes, no matter what color we are. Differ will the forms we celebrate, and not the specific forms of the Wampanoag traditions does Manitonquat bring us white people, but the universal understanding of the ways of human beings to live with each other in peace, cooperating instead of competing, instead of dominating living in harmony with our environment. Our new forms then, we ourselves shall re-create...
(relationships)
When i met Manitonquat 12 years ago i was on junk and, in tune with what i heard of men in the prison circles, i do say that by opening my eyes and my heart to this unknown reality, Manitonquat had done something like saving my life - mine and those of my children as well. I am no 'follower' of his - i do not believe he got many of such, and surely he doesn't encourage anybody to 'follow' him - but highly i do appreciate his work, his efforts and his dedication, dearly i love him as my grandfather of choice and humbly i thank creation for having met him and others and pray to find ways to return the blessings i received. From all these years i remember one single case of a person angrily disagreeing and parting from the newly emerging 'tribe'. Else than that, whomever i happen to know and in fact had been meeting Manitonquat, as to my knowledge, is feeling blessed by these encounters.
(sex)
Now i must mention the ugly thing. On your site, Manitonquat at first appears to be set into context of sexual abuse by the posting of 6 long contributions discussing the controversal approach to sexuality of ZEGG and Tamera, all under the title 'Re: Francis Talbot AKA Medicine Story AKA Manitonquat'.
Manitonquat is obviously not Tamera and not ZEGG, even if they cooperate on overlapping interests (e.g. community work, peace work), and even if they like each other. Having sex is not part of the seminars with Manitonquat, to the contrary, it is recommended to the participants, not to jump on each other - not from any moral reasons, but simply from the 'therapeutic' point of view, to say it simple. It is not forbidden though, since the participants are free people and responsible for themselves, and it happens sometimes, that couples find together, especially in the longer camps during the summer, and not seldom these people indeed couple up for living together and not just for a quick affair in the holidays.
Furthermore some articles relate him to the sexual abuse claims Sun Bear had faced, and then even warn woman from taking part in seminars with Manitonquat, and finally some even accuse Manitonquat himself of unspeakable things. Well, let me tell you that me as a woman sensitive to the issue got in 12 years never ever the slightest hint as to any sexual abuse that could have taken place in any single one of the workshops or camps with Manitonquat i've attended, which were quite a lot, or which i've heard of, neither by Manitonquat himself nor by any of the participants. In 12 years i heard no woman, no man and no child ever mention this subject. So, dear article writer/s, i admit, i am moderately curious as for your sources, or honestly as for your hurts, that made you put out such an insult. Point.
(conclusion)
Finally, if i may, i'd like to direct your attention to a few more book reviews which you've seemingly been unaware of so far...
Please look again at http://www.amazon.com/review/product/0943404207/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?_encoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 and consider especially the review from gkisedtanamoogk, a well known and respected Wampanoag, teacher of Native Studies at the university of Maine, who writes in a letter to FM Story Talbot (Manitonquat):
"Thanks for sharing these stories --- i have always enjoyed the manner and style You share these Visions of the Heart. So, Netomp, You have my greatest affection and support.
i will offer this as a supportive statement:
Manitonqat's unique and wondrous manner of sharing ancient and contemporary stories of the Wampanoag follows in the profoundly valued tradition of the Pauwau. Especially applied to the Indigenous Nations and Peoples of the Northeast, maintaining a People's History is both a fine art and an evocative response to the incoherence, tyranny, and cynicism of modernity. Manitonqat is one of the Wampanoag Nation's leading national treasures.
As this is offered in the deepest respect for You as a person and Your wonderfully inspiring style.
gk
gkisedtanamoogk"
Given all the information provided above, i am positive that you will reconsider blacklisting FM Story Talbot, since, the way i understand your intention, i do not believe that it lies in your interest to defame a man, who is doing such a famous work towards healing the earth, by helping so numerous people of any color and heritage to get healed and whole again - and healed and whole people will neither act in racist manners, nor will they exploit the earth, and these achievements should lie in our all common interest, isn't it so? For any questions left open, please find Medicine Story's contact details on his homepage at http://circleway.org .
While writing, in me emerged a desire to share that i do wonder a bit about your approach to put out such heavy judgments based on so little evidence, judgments which not only damage one's reputation, but also and in the first place must be truly hurtful for a person, who's first thought, as far as i can tell, is about 'his' people, the people of his tribe, of the circles he initiates and maintains, circles in the prisons and out of the prisons, circles of young and old people, native and non native, and about all children of humankind around the earth, of present and of future generations - for such a person it must be very painful to be alleged of fraud, even only suspected of something as terrible as sexual abuse, accused to distort his culture to make a buck and exploit the prisoners whom he dedicated his life to.
I'd like to close with a quote from one of those very prisoners, addressed to Manitonquat, and i fully go with it: "I don't judge a man by what he says, but by what he does. You have been coming to us every week in every weather for years and have helped me change my life. Where are those who talk about you? We never see them. Your actions show us what is true and we know your heart."

If you truly appreciated the intention you would understand peoples concerns. If you are not native or even american how do you know that what he is doing is proper? Because he says so? Because he allows you to 'act' native during his encampments?
My name is Joe Barlow. That is my 'indian name'. We don't all have these names that have been recently popularized via the newage movement. Can you explain how it is that he has been called Story from birth? He certainly has not been called Manitonquat from birth as he does not know his language. Sure he can recite a few prayers verbatum but this is not knowing the language, this is memorization.
I only know one person here so I cannot speak for everyone, but myself and that one person are not mediums so we cannot speak with the dead. That makes it rather difficult to question John Peters, or Slow Turtle as he was known. If you know of a verified medium who could assist in doing this it would be appreciated.
Have you ever been to one of his prison circles? As an inmate I mean. Actually as an enrolled First Nations inmate. I have for far too long. Both myself and another inmate, Billy Sun, who is from a very respected Ho Chunk family were constantly demeaned and ridiculed by Mr. Talbot. When Billy's wife died in a motorcycle accident Mr. Talbot insinuated, at a circle in the Berlin facility in the state of New Hampshire that it was some how a punishment toward Billy. Do you understand that now that Billy and I are out that there ARE NO NATIVES IN THOSE CIRCLES? He is defrauding you. And by instructing these non-indians to think that they have a right to our ceremonies he is creating problems for the community. He does half-assed naming ceremonies (in english), he participates in and conducts half-assed pipe ceremony, allowing the 'pipe keeper' to belittle real indians and continuously disrespecting the pipe. The current 'pipe keeper' in Berlin New Hampshire is a man by the name of Gary Farrow. Gary Farrow is doing a life sentence for murdering a mentally retarded man because he owed a friend money for a pack of cigarettes. Gary Farrow was one a white supremisist. Gary Farrow has also changed his name to 'Prayer Feather'. What upsets me the most is that he allowed Gary Farrow to lie in court and make the false claim that he is a member of the Lakota Nation in order to win a suit for a sweat in New Hampshire. Why does there need to be a swet in New Hampshire when actual enrolled First Nation peoples do not even participate? That lodge should not even be in opreation as the priviledge wsa gained on lies and with disrespect toward the actual Lakota people. I won't even go into what the sweats are like there, this is not the place for such things but I will tell you this, they are far from traditional and for the most part are run by his half brother Jim Farnum who is not native. Are you also aware that Talbot brought in nude photos of his wife Elika? The photos were in a photoalbum and the pictures were taken mainly in nature settings, mostly at the coast from what I was told. When I saw what was in the album I chose not to look so I am telling you what others told me. Do you understand that there are sex offenders in prison? DO you understandthat he placed his wife in danger in doing this?
HE IS TEACHING CHILDREN LIES. That is shameful. There is no excuse in the world for lying to children. None, period.
You do not know this man at all if you think he is not out for personal advantages. He does not care about indian people. If he cared about the indian people he would not be in Europe all of the time. When he is in Europe, please tell me, does he want for anything? Are his needs seen to? Of course they are. Why stay in the states for any length of time where, if he were indian, he would have to deal with the realities of life on a day to day basis? Please, ask him why he charges inmates for his silly little books. Please ask him why it is another organization and not his own that provides the necessities for misinformed incarcerated non-natives to perform ceremony?
Could it [the assumed money] be 'flowing' into the 'regular trips to Europe'? Well, the workshop schedule is carefully planned to minimize travel expenses, which are then raised via the workshops. Any leftover 'flows' into prison project and nature school.
No money flows into the prison project. Have you ever thought to look into his financials using guidestar?
Mr. Talbot performs 'lakota style' sweats. You are obviously not familiar with protocol. I will tell you this, I was taught that one should not do mixed sweats. I am offended of the idea of mixed sweats where participants are encouraged to disrobe. Let me say once again that I see no representation of funds within his prison project. Funds going toward a nature school where children are lied to is inappropriate.
So you feel completely comfortable giving money to perpetuate stereotypes. That's rather racist I have to say. I might add that you are paying for false teachings.
My life would be sweet too if I was given money for lying as I jet setted about Europe. Oh but wait, I have morals so I wouldn't do that.
There are no 'native american teachings'. There is no beauty in native american living when we are being continuously exploited. To think that there are 'native american teachings' further proves you are being taken advantage of.
Culture has nothing to do with respect or lack there of. You don't need to pay for an indigenous education to respect creation. Also, exploitation, perpetuation of stereotypes, and many other things that Mr Talbot participates in have little to do with respect. If you cannot respect a culture that you claim to be a member of you can't begin to respect anything else. IT IS A FASCADE.
I have no idea what a Momo is nor am I familiar with Michael Ende. I did a search on him and I see that he is German. If he teaches you listening skills then why not use his teaching as opposed to a bastardized version of something you obviously know very little about?
He teaches 'universal understanding' under a cloak of deciet. You may have no doubt about his because you have no idea what actual indians are really like. My 'original instructions' are quite different from the original instructions of your culture. I would never appropriate yours, why do you choose to appropraite ours?
You say that when you met Francis Talbot 12 years ago you were on junk. You merely swapped one high or fix for another. Shooting up heroin just because it makes you feel good is wrong, would you agree? How is this different? I will tell you, it is worse that shooting up heroin, because when you steal for your next fix you know what you are getting into. You clearly have no idea what you are involved in nor do you care about it's effect on the people you are stealing from.
I do not know what Zegg or Tamera are but they do not sound good. If they are not good then why would Mr Talbot associate with them? You cannot talk about peace and then sexually abuse someone and still be peaceful. I am very sorry for you if you cannot see the complete wrongness in that.
Point.
Mr Talbot himself offers sexual workshops. Former inmates have spoken about the inappropriate behavior that takes place at Mettanokit, now the Nature School. Are you aware than an inmate sexually assaulted two women there? Are you aware that Mr Talbot felt that the inmate's parole should not have been revoked?

One quote from a link that does not seem to work will not change my opinion gained from personal experience.

First, is the inmate you speak of indian? If he did he would not have made such a statement. I would have far preferred not having any volunteers at all over his sanctimonious rhetoric.
You have a lot to learn Mariam. I feel sorry for you and the deception you hold as reality.

I guess we should be referring to Talbot at Dr Talbot now. It seems that he recieved a Doctorate in Metephysical Theology from this place - http://www.americancollege.com/Media/AmColl.htm

Apparently on his facebook page Talbot is pushing for the release of Denis Paul Gagne, a child rapist serving a life sentence without possibility of parole. Talbot argues for a compassionate release because Gagne is fighting throat cancer.
Gagne's record. The details, once you get past the legalese, are pretty grim reading. Apparently he coerced two girls, six and seven year olds, into giving him oral sex.
http://nh.findacase.com/research/wfrmDocViewer.aspx/xq/fac.%5Cnh%5CPLS%5C1992%5C19920814_0004.NH.htm/qx
Part of the problem with Talbot's taking up for Gagne is Talbot's own long history of demanding sex for ceremony or attempted coercion for sex, plus working with a cult that argues rape is OK. How can we know Gagne is reformed or no longer dangerous? Pedophiles have one the highest repeat offender rates.

Francis Story Talbot is a Re-evaluation Counselor, he not only practices it, he teaches it. This fact is very disturbing.
Re-evaluation Counseling was founded by Harvey Jackins, who originally was part of Dianetics/Scientology. He developed something called co-counseling, starting in Seattle, Washington, USA. He was a sexual predator. Jackins formed a psychotherapy cult. He has since passed on, his son and others now run the group.
"United to End Racism" is a front group for this organization.

BITTER MEDICINE
Reformers seek to outlaw therapists’ sexual exploits
March l0-March l7, l982
Should therapists in Washington State be permitted to have sexual relations with their clients? Shirley Siegel doesn’t think so. She was in therapy for years with Harvey Jackins, a 60 year old ex-Dianetics leader who now runs his own international organization, Re-evaluation Counseling, headquartered on Queen Anne Hill. Its membership has been estimated at l00,00 to 200,00. Siegel claims that Jackins sexually exploited her on the pretext of helping her "work on (her) sexual problems." Spokesmen for Jackins and his organization say he is being victimized by a "smear campaign."
This fall after decades of silence, Siegel co-founded Stop Abuse by Counselors, which lobbied two bills before the legislature this session intended to regulate errant therapists. House Bill 954 would make it a class B felony for "health professionals" to have sexual contact with a client. House Bill 953, aimed at unlicensed counselors, would prohibit sexual conduct with clients; failure to refer clients who need help (e.g., medical help) the counselor can’t provide; false advertising; "undue influence, fraud, or intimidation": practicing while ill or using "alcohol, drugs, narcotics, or any other substance": the counselor’s failure to disclose credentials and employment history; and a few other items. Despite support of the intent of one or both bills by the Washington State Medical Association, the Washington State Psychiatric Association, the Seattle Office of Women’s Rights, the American Association of Pastoral Counselors/Northwest Region, and other groups, both are dead in committee.
The most unified front against the legislation came from the Re-evaluation Counseling camp, which was represented by seven or eight partisans in Olympia. They neglected to mention their R.C. affiliation, but Siegel make not of it in her testimony. ("I used to lobby legislators for R.C., too," she recalls, "just like all the other good little robots.")

Black and white photo is of Francis Story Talbot, Cornell University yearbook, 1951, he was active in drama club, rhythm club, dance club, young republican's club.
I'll keep adding to this thread as I work on genealogy, will also add in any news articles that might be helpful.
Francis and Jim have same mother, different fathers. Neither of them have recent NDN heritage from what I can see so far.

OFF THE ROAD / PETER ANDERSON
GREENVILLE, N.H. -- F. Story Talbot, Cornell '54, lived in New York City, writing and producing plays off-off Broadway for 12 years until he looked about him and saw the city as it was, crime and fear of crime, dirt and death, and decided he was not prepared to stay in that place. He traveled the country, looking for something he could not find in books, finding it by talking to the old people. He changed his name and became medicine man of the Assonet band of the Wampanoags.
He lives in a house trailer in the woods of this town, on 15 acres of what had been a community of 15 like souls now reduced to four people, including himself and his Swedish wife, Ellika. I came to see him because a persistent publicity woman kept calling me from the state of Washington, wanting to know if I had read his book she had sent me, "Return to Creation" (Bear Tribe Publishing, Spokane, Wash.).
....
He took his new name in 1973 after fasting for four days in northern California. He came out of a sweat lodge and had a vision that he would take a path to tell about native wisdom. This wisdom is similar to other philosophies: that we should protect the earth for our children, that goodness is worthy and sharing is the best part of goodness. He shares his insight with prisoners, holding spiritual circles in jail with Indians, most of whom he says are rotting there because of alcohol-related crimes and what poison it was the white man brought to America.
-------
We sat in a room built onto a house trailer, a room filled with books, most of them serious, and with cassettes. He has a contract to write a book based on Wampanoag stories he has recorded and does a one-man show based on the life of Black Elk, a Sioux holy man. He also goes to Europe several times a year to speak of the spirit.
His message, if I understand it, is that man is created good. It is the institutions of society which pollute our land and our people. He could be writing speeches for Jerry Brown. He conducts spiritual circles in Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Helsinki and returns to those cities "over and over." Where there is a suitable place, he constructs a sweat lodge. I suggested his message was better received in Europe than in this country, and he agreed. Playwright F. Story Talbot is now known as Medicine Story. If he is a prophet, he is without honor in his own land

Francis Story Talbot (Medicine Story) claims NDN heritage through "my father's family, the Indian side". He says this is specifically through his grandfather who is also named Francis Story Talbot, that his grandfather passed on important stories and teachings.
Medicine Story refers to himself as a "university educated traditionalist". He says he wasn't raised by his birth father. That he was briefly a playwright and had various theater groups in NY. Also that the name "Story" most likely came from a friend of his grandparent's parents.

He is indeed educated. Census and a 1930 Daily Boston Globe newspaper article about a child custody dispute backs his statement that he was not raised by his father. He was a playwright under the names "Story Talbot" and "F. Story Talbot".
His father was Herbert H Talbot 1906 MA - 2001 FL. Always white in census. His mother Priscilla, there was an early contentious divorce, she then married James Farnham.
Looks like these families at times had money, for instance both Herbert and Prisicilla as young single adults applied for passports for extensive world travel sightseeing. They employed people as servants. Medicine Story himself was raised in households with servants.
His grandfather Frank (Francis) Story Talbot was listed as white in the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940 census. On a military registration he is listed white, the box for white is checked, not Indian.
Frank Story Talbot's parents were George Howard Talbot and Adelia M Storer. Adelia's birth surname of Storer may very well be the source of her son's middle name Story. In all census they are white.
And here is the biography of Medicine Story's ancestor, George Howard Talbot, father of Medicine Story's claimed NDN grandfather Frank (Francis) Story Talbot:
http://books.google.com/books?id=AmTJUSifk8AC&pg=PA635&lpg=PA635&dq=%22joseph+talbot%22+mary+pratt&source=bl&ots=B9Nmeft7pU&sig=AaeJ3MOJyo0UwxfQ58Nu1ZmmeH4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=FqGVUczaEKSBiAL71ICoBg&ved=0CEMQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=%22joseph%20talbot%22%20mary%20pratt&f=false (http://books.google.com/books?id=AmTJUSifk8AC&pg=PA635&lpg=PA635&dq=%22joseph+talbot%22+mary+pratt&source=bl&ots=B9Nmeft7pU&sig=AaeJ3MOJyo0UwxfQ58Nu1ZmmeH4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=FqGVUczaEKSBiAL71ICoBg&ved=0CEMQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=%22joseph%20talbot%22%20mary%20pratt&f=false)
George H Talbot was born in 1846, son of Joseph and Mary L (Pratt) Talbot. Stated in his bio is "It is impossible to trace with certainty the ancestral history of this particular branch of the Talbot family, as there have been no records kept".
Medicine Story says his people are from Dighton, Bristol county, MA. They are. But it doesn't look like his NDN heritage claims are true.

Rainbow Family Gatherings = mostly white hippies pretending to be their version of Indian. Rainbow gatherings in the past have not been safe places, many reports can be found of assaults, rapes, violence, and way too much drugs.
Here is part of an account from a person who says they first experienced sweat lodge in 1979 at a Rainbow gathering, run by Medicine Story:
I experienced my first Indian sweat lodge at the 1979 Rainbow Gathering on July 3. I had read about them before and wanted to try one. I got the opportunity when I ran into a Native American medicine man (Medicine Story) at the gathering who was going to do one, so naturally, I decided to take part in it.
The sweat lodge is a dome shaped structure that has a pit in the center. Outside the sweat lodge, there is a fire which is used to heat rocks until they are red hot. Then, the rocks are placed in the pit in the sweat lodge and everyone gets in and it is sealed up. I think there were about five of us in there, plus Medicine Story.
The medicine man says a few words of peace to help center the energy and then precedes to sprinkle water on the hot rocks. When he does this, we all chant. I think we were in there for a couple of hours. After it was over, I noticed it produces a feeling much like what you feel like after being in an isolation tank. The major difference is that the sweat lodge is a group experience while the isolation tank is a solitary one. Even so, both experiences tend to give you the we are all one feeling that LSD is known to produce.
I used to know the Indian customs for building a sweat lodge, but that was a long time ago. From what I remember, eight poles are used to support the structure and I think the doorway is supposed to be on the east side. There is also a certain branch that the medicine man uses to sprinkle the water on the hot rocks. I'm not sure what else is involved.
One thing I do need to stress as that you should not try a sweat lodge if you do not know what you're doing because you can be badly burned from the intense heat if you don't. Much like coal walking, you have to learn how to alter your consciousness to protect your physical body. Those who can get into the chanting and into the spirit of the whole thing usually do just fine, but those who get paranoid over the whole affair can get hurt. That happened to the person who turned me on to my first Rainbow Gathering.

Some even began to insinuate that I might not be Wampanoag, even though, unknown to them, a genealogy had been done in my band that proved my heritage (I did not ask for or want a genealogy done, nor would I ask for anyone else's proof of their heritage, I would only take their word), even though my family appears clearly in the Indian census (Earle Reports) of the mid-nineteenth century, even though I was the official medicine man of the Assonet Band, working closely with Slow Turtle and the Mashpee medicine man gkisedtanamoogk, rebuilding our traditional tribal ways.
This is a Talbot quote from earlier in the thread. Seems really weird that he would be so strange about his genealogy, as if it is bad to "ask for or want" his genealogy done. As if it is taboo. But at the same time his claim to fame is his claimed heritage.
Why didn't he know his own ancestry?
even though my family appears clearly in the Indian census (Earle Reports) of the mid-nineteenth century
In 1859, Francis Story Talbot's ancestors were Joseph Talbot 1810 - 1859 and his wife Mary L Pratt 1817 - 1863, and their son George H Talbot b 1846, who married Adelia H Storer b 1849.
Here is a copy of the Report to the Governor and Council Concerning the Indians of the Commonwealth Under the Act of April 6, 1859 (Earle Reports): http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~history/grafton2/Nipmunk%20Trib%20Listing.txt (http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~history/grafton2/Nipmunk%20Trib%20Listing.txt)

Francis Story Talbot/ Medicine Story's people are not on this list.
If I'm wrong, it is very very easy for Medicine Story to show us otherwise. Who are his ancestors? Why would he be evasive and mysterious about them?

Keeping in mind that Medicine Story claims NDN heritage through his paternal grandfather Francis Story (or Storey) Talbot, and that Francis Story Talbot's father was George Herbert Talbot, these passages from a 1912 book "Representative Men and Old Families of Southeastern Massachusetts, containing historical sketches" are particularly interesting:
GEORGE HOWARD TALBOT, founder of the Norton Mills Company, now the Talbot Wool Combing Company, Inc., and a well-
known and prominent citizen of Norton, is a descendant of an old established family of Bristol county, ancient and honored in England as well as America.
George Howard Talbot, son of Joseph and Mary L. (Pratt), was born March 17, 1846, in Dighton, Mass. He attended the common schools of his native town and supplemented this with a few sessions at a private school in the nearby town of Somerset, taught by Henry T. Buffington, a well-known teacher of that section
.
In the autumn of 1867 Mr. Talbot came to the town of Norton, where he assumed charge of wool sorting for the concern of Williams &
Co., who were doing a small business in that line at the Willis mills, on the Rumford river.
The piece goes on to say he expanded his wool business very successfully. The mills employed about 200 people.
Now about his son, Francis Story Talbot:
Francis Story Talbot, born in Norton March 2, 1878, was educated in the local public school and in the Bryant & Straiton business
college at Providence, R. I. He entered his father's business, becoming secretary, and upon the formation of the new corporation he be-
came secretary and treasurer. He married Adelayde Bemis, of Foxboro, Mass., and they have three children. Marguerite, Gertrude and
Herbert Hersey
.
Herbert Hersey Talbot is Medicine Story / Francis Story Talbot's father.

As an addition to your genealogical research, we also got a confirmation on his ethnic affiliation as a white person which was written in a German forum. Although the forum has been taken down, there is well documented (German Wikipedia!) evidence of who Talbot is and who he isn't. The following contributions are taken from the discussion site of the article on the Wampanoag nation which formerly mentioned Talbot:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diskussion:Wampanoag#Manitonquat
Meanwhile, even the scene of his supporters should be aware that the man's name in real life is Francis Talbot, white and not a „member of the Assonet group of the Wampanoag tribe“. So he does not belong in this article – and furthermore there are no references at all for the claims regarding his persons.
My references so far are also just claims, but I am looking for the truth :-)
1. Contribution in an internet forum by a supporter and organiser of Manitonquat:
„Right, several things: 1. That Manitonquat's real name is Francis Talbot and that he is not of Indian descent is known to me for some time already (and BTW not only to me but to several persons of the camp, when asked he does not make a secret of it), but: so WHAT?! Apparently he lived with the Wampanoag for some time and this on its own qualifies him as a „story teller“ and to tell about his experience there. I do not remember he ever described himself as a „shaman“ or any other type of guru, some other participants of the camp do (admittedly, they're Bear Tribe, but who f*cking cares [Engish original], as long as they'be been thinking and achieved some sort of wisdom?)“

The homepage of the author of this contribution: http://www.international-camp.de/ ***
2. Article from an Italian site on Indians, reference given in link below:
„Medicine Story, also known as Manitonquat, is a white American pretending to be a Wampanoag medicine man. His real name is Francis Talbot. Talbot found a fertile field of activity in the north eastern part of the USA. In an area where not much is left of Indian peoples and traditions therefore vanished, it was easy for him, with the help of another fake shaman (Sun Bear), to gather a group of persons of distant Indian ancestry who also have no idea of the tradition of the peoples they descended from and build a circle with them...

As mentioned before, so far these are also „just“ claims, but I'll keep at it. For the time being, I wont delete anything (so far?), I'm too new for an action like this. Pudow, 09.12.07
Just deleted that paragraph for you, the reasons given are plausible.--Nikater 19:02, 10. Dez. 2006 (CET)
Thanks, Nikater, didn't think things would run that smoothly. Just saw that there are two books written by Manitonquat mentioned which I think also haven't got anything to do with the Wampanoag but only with Manitonquat's „teachings“. Pudow, 10.12.06
Well, the above quoted post from that forum was written by me, didn't think it was going to be a reference at Wikipedia, otherwise I'd have certainly phrased differently. I assumed to communicate with persons who think information and opinion were important, and who were not making this a „matter of principle“. I further would like to comment that the accusations against Maintonquat [sic] are based on sheer speculation, I also did not see any reference which gave evidence that he was „exploiting“ the Indian culture(s) in any way unasked or illegitimately. Athan (Jonus) 10.12.06
@Jonus or Athan: This is not about accusations – it is not about what Manitonquat does, the issue is simply his identity resp his ethnic non-affiliation with the Wampanoag. As far as this is concerned, this is in fact a „matter of principle“, i.e. about truth and honesty, about right and wrong. Quotes should also be seen in this way. Anything else should be discussed elsewhere.-- Pudow 00:17, 11. Dez. 2006 (CET)

This wiki focused on intentional communities http://www.ic.org/wiki/manitonquat/ (http://www.ic.org/wiki/manitonquat/) has a section on Talbot, including coverage of controversy concerning him.
Over the years there has been some controversy about Manitonquat. There are two main areas of accusation and criticism. Firstly, that he is a white man making money out of native american teachings, changing the traditional stories of the Wampanoag and is basically a “new age fraud”. A second area of criticism is that he is connected with the intentional communities of ZEGG in Germany and Tamera in Portugal, both of which have been criticised for their promotion of free sexuality, for being like cults, and for some of the things said by their founders, Dieter Duhm and Sabine Lichtenfels.
Manitonquat himself asserts that he is of mixed heritage, Wampanoag on his father’s side and much influenced by the stories his grandfather told him. Many people attend his camps and his lectures because of his native american heritage, but much of what he promotes is from other sources, such as co-counselling and from his long experience in intentional communities and the Rainbow Gatherings. His writings, such as The Circle Way make this clear. People who want “pure” native american spirituality will be disappointed.
Traditional stories and myths usually exist in many variants, and retelling them and reworking them is both acceptable and common, and sometimes, when plagiarism takes place, a matter for criticism. The Grimm brothers in Germany changed many of the stories that they were told, but none the less produced a “classic” collection of folk tales.
Many of the ideas and methods that he promotes have little in common with “New Age Esoteric”, being down-to-earth methods for organizing groups, holding meetings, resolving conflicts, and developing and growing together.
Manitonquat makes no secret of his connections to ZEGG and Tamera. Both of these intentional communities have been criticised and ostracised over the years by some other intentional communities and by part of the left. However, the “cult-like” aspects of these groups have diminished with time, and contact with them is no longer a taboo in the German community movement. Certainly, things said or written by Duhm and Lichtenfels remain contoversial or reprehensible, and they cannot change their personal biographies, however their influence on ZEGG today is minimal and Tamera has developed into an active political centre for peace.
NAFPS is given as a link.
-
Quite incidentially, ZEGG happens to be a member of the organisation:
http://www.ic.org/directory/zegg-centre-for-experimental-cultural-design/ ,
and they repeat some of the apologetics ZEGG has come up with over the years.

Talbot died on July 21, 2018. His son posted an obituary and there was no mention of any Wampanoag association.
Today, my father, Francis Medicine Story Talbot passed away peacefully at our home, surrounded by friends and family. He was 89. Story lived a long, adventurous, beautiful and loving life.
He came from a family of means, but found that material wealth held no interest for him, and he started on a lifelong search for meaning. His path took him many places, as an actor, director and producer on the stage to the hippie movement, crashing the gates of Woodstock and being a part of Rainbow Family, as a storyteller and elder.
He began writing and teaching his ideas on community and returning to our original purpose through a connection with creation and each other, ideas that resonated with the many people whose lives he touched. For decades, he continued his inclusive work of creating circles, teaching, listening and building communities, in his work in prisons in the US and workshops and camps in Europe, until he fell ill only weeks ago.
He is survived by the love of his life and partner in promoting love and peace, Ellika, his two children, Tashin Talbot and Tokeem Talbot, their partners Frieda Tlbt and Tanja (Ta Ta) and his four grandchildren, his brother Jim and his sisters Linda and Mary and his sisters and brothers of the Rainbow Family and the Circle Way. In the coming days, plans for remembering Story together will be announced.
Walk in beauty, Manitonquat

Talbot claimed his Wampanoag ancestry came from his grandfather who was also named Francis Story Talbot. The elder Francis's father's name was George Howard Talbot. The History of Bristol County, Massachusetts: With Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men, Part 2, page 635 states that the family traces is history back to the early days of settlement and further back into Europe. No ties to the Wampanoag what so ever. In the biography it shows clearly that the middle name Story comes from the last name of a gentleman George Howard was in a business partnership with, it had nothing to do with ties to indigenous ancestry. The elder Francis Story Talbot nor his father lived or participated in any type of Native American culture nor did anyone further back in the family.

Pfffft. I was at a gathering many years ago with real medicine elders and watched this man speak jibberish thinking he knew real teachings and the real elders that were there he put down, he was never editor of Akwesasne times, I know who the editors were.....then he got so mad for being challenged by the real medicine elders he packed up n left the gathering......now isn't that an admission of guilt, to run ..... If he was true to who he said he was he wouldn't run out of fear of being exposed to his fraud by the real Anishinabeg.
