First thank you for allowing me the priviledge of being on this forum.  Last week a customer of mine who raises throughbred horses and races them in the southeast told me that he had been to a meeting I believe he said Montgomery.  He said that some Cherokee tribe was attempting to acquire support inorder to purchase one square mile of land in the Guntersville Al aera.  They hope to develope a casino-horsetrack-sixflags type vinue. Land prices alone would run close to one billion I believe. I am to go by his house Monday look at the lititure maybe I can find out more.  I'll report back as soon as I find out.  In the meantime have any of you heard about this?  Thanks LittleOld Man

The United Cherokee Ani Uniwa are based on Guntersville. Does anyone here know of them?

While many would be Cherokee tribes are based on dubious rumors, this one does seem to have some basis for saying they are Cherokees.

http://www.guntersville.com/history.htm
"The areas first inhabitants
a. The Tallegwis were the first Indian inhabitants. The Tallegwis are ancestors of the Cherokee.
b. Shawnees arrived in the area around 1660. The Shawnee invaded Cherokee Hunting Ground. The Cherokee began an annual battle with the Shawnee which took place in January and February of each year. The battles lasted for 40 years when the Shawnee were finally forced to move north. The Cherokee were the largest tribe to ever inhabit Guntersville, with the Creeks also having many villages.
c. After the Creek War (1813-1814), Andrew Jackson was called to what is now Brown's Creek to aid in fending off the Creeks. Jackson established his base around the Street's Bluff area in Warrenton, and this was his center for receiving supplies and ammunition.
d. Jackson eventually defeated the Creeks at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Jackson became the seventh President of the United States fifteen years later. The victory at Horseshoe Bend is said to have helped Jackson gain the Presidency.
e. Indians still remained in the area after Marshall County was formed in 1836, and it was not until three years later, in 1839, that the last of the Indians were removed."

"Guntersville is named after John Gunter. Gunter was the Tennessee Valley's first squatter 1 to settle illegally on Indian land.
b. Little is known of Gunter's early life. It is thought that he was a Scotsman.
c. Gunter settled south of where the River Bridge now stands, and in 1784 he named the location Gunter's Village.
d. Upon his arrival, Gunter met Chief Bushyhead who offered John his daughter in exchange for salt. John accepted and married Ghe-to-he-li who later changed her name to Catherine. They had seven children who all became important in the history of Guntersville. Gunter's great grandson Will Rogers  became a famous American humorist."

There's also a Cherokee Tribe of NE AL, in Albertville.

And an Echota Wolf Clan that holds a powwow.

But so far I don't see any sign of any of them looking to start a casino. Rumors of this kind are pretty common about a lot of NDN tribes, real or otherwise.

I didn't know or haven't seen any State Tribes involved in Casino or Race Track gambling. I thought they had to have Federal Recognition. I know some have been approached by Gambling Corp. but it has never happen to my knowledge. frederica

I live about 30 minutes from Guntersville and have not heard or seen anything in the news about this.  I do know that someone in Fort Payne, AL have given land to the Keetoowah Band of the Cherokee.  That sent uproar through DeKalb county thinking that a casino was going to be built.  The Keetoowah (or at least part of them) were looking to relocate to this land and possibly open a cultural center.

Oh, I forgot to mention that an individual I have had run ins with on Yahoo 360 is claiming to be "enrolled" AniKetowag' and after researching I found out that he is a "member" of the Cherokee of NE Alabama (they say they are state recognized).  This group does own land around N. AL, including a campground in Grant, AL.

Research continues: The Chrokee Tribe of Northeast AL is a state recognized tribe Owns some small amount of land near Grant Al. Does not allow dual membership as far as I know.  Go to their web page get a contact number call and report the offender the will take care of it.  Membership close to 4000 or so now.  Tribal authorities are aware of the plan as I indicated and It will be fought by both Cno as well as Eastern Band.  Believe it to be connected to the same people who tried to set one up in DeKalb Co.  Seems to be deep pockets backing it.  Research to continue will update as more info is discovered Discusted looks lile we are being used again ugh!  LittleOldMan

Update;  Mans name is R Pine he shows a card indicating that he is a member of The Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama.  Checked with both former cheif as well as current chief.  They are aware of this situation as well as is the council.  They "the tribe"  are  not behind this move.  They have been notified, they are aware, they will decide what action to take.  Will update as needed.  Thank you .
