Subject: [nafps] Re: Sac Be, Carlos Barrios???

I couldn't get into their site. best I could find was this other one describing their "work". This is the first I've heard of this particular group or its leader.
The amazing and appalling thing to me was how they could be talking about Guatemala, with its several hundred thousand dead, and stay
fixated on "What does this have to do with ME ME ME, the Nuager here in my suburban home?"

The Mayan Calendar: Mystic Key to a New World
In early Autumn 2002, Carlos Barrios journeyed North from his home in Guatemala to the Eastern edge of the Four Corners. In Santa Fe, NM,
at the tail of the Rocky Mountains, Mr. Barrios spoke in a knowledgeable manner about the Mayan tradition and the fabled Mayan
calendars.

THE WORLD WILL NOT END
Messages from the Mayan Mileu
by Steven McFadden
Carlos Barrios was born into a Spanish family on El Altiplano, the highlands of Guatemala. His home was in Huehuetenango, also the dwelling place of the Maya Mam tribe. With other Maya and other
indigenous tradition keepers, the Mam carry part of the old ways on Turtle Island (North America). They are keepers of time, authorities on remarkable calendars that are ancient, elegant and relevant.

>>>Uh, Carlos? Turtle Island is not a Mayan term. Wrong set of NDNs, bubba. But it was refreshing for you to admit upfront you are *Not
Mayan*. Then you have ruin it by this next claim.

Mr. Barrios is a historian, an anthropologist and investigator. After studying with traditional elders for 25 years since the age of 19, he has also became a Mayan Ajq'ij, a ceremonial priest and spiritual guide, Eagle Clan.

>>>Naturally they turned to a "great white hope" like you Carlos. Can't actually have Mayans talking about their own traditions, can we?

Years ago, along with his brother, Gerardo, Carlos initiated an investigation into the different Mayan calendars. He studied with many teachers. He says his brother Gerardo interviewed nearly 600
traditional Mayan elders to widen their scope of knowledge. "Anthropologists visit the temple sites," Mr. Barrios says, "and read the stelas and inscriptions and make up stories about the Maya, but they do not read the signs correctly. It's just their imagination...Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan
elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed. The indigenous have the calendars, and know how to accurately interpret it, not others."

>>>How very convenient. "Only *I* know the truth!"

We are living in the most important era of the Mayan calendars and prophecies. All the prophecies of the world, all the traditions, are
converging now. There is no time for games. The spiritual ideal of this era is action. Many powerful souls have reincarnated in this era, with a lot of power. This is true on both sides, the light and the dark. High magic is at work on both sides.

>>>Too bad the Mayan don't believe in reincarnation, and the light and dark emphasis is very much a Christian belief, taken from
Zoroastrianism in Persia.

The banks are weak. This is a delicate moment for them. They could crash globally if we dont pay attention. One critical period is October and November 2002. If the banks crash in thesemonths then we will be forced to rely on the land and our skills. The monetary systems will be in chaos, and we must then rely on our direct relationship with the Earth for our food and shelter. The North and South Poles are both breaking up. The level of the water in the oceans is going to rise. But at the same time land in the ocean, especially near Cuba, is also going to rise.

Pt 2
A Call for Fusion As he met with audiences in Santa Fe, Mr. Barrios told a story about the most recent Mayan New Year ceremonies in Guatemala. He said that one respected Mam elder, who lives all year in a solitary mountain cave, journeyed to Chichicastenango to speak with the people at the
ceremony. The elder delivered a simple, direct message. He called for human beings to come together in support of life and light. Right now each
person and group is going his or her own way. The elder of the mountains said there is hope if the people of the light can come together and unite in some way....

>>>Very convenient, no mention of the alleged elder's name. And even if he said this, it has *no relation whatsoever* to all of the following nonsense about "ether" and "fusion".

Mr. Barrios said the emerging era of the Fifth Sun will call attention to a much-overlooked element. Whereas the four traditional elements of earth, air, fire and water have dominated various epochs
in the past, there will be a fifth element to reckon with in the time of the Fifth Sun: ether.

>>>Oh brother, that "four elements" stuff is straight from *Europe*.

The dictionary defines ether as the rarefied element of the Heavens. Ether is a medium. It permeates all space and transmits waves of
energy in a wide range of frequencies, from cell phones to human auras. What is "ethereal" is related to the regions beyond earth: the
heavens. Ether - the element of the Fifth Sun - is celestial and lacking in material substance, but is no less real than wood, stone or flesh.
"Within the context of ether there can be a fusion of the polarities," Mr. Barrios said. "No more darkness or light in the people, but an uplifted fusion. But right now the realm of darkness
is not interested in this. They are organized to block it...We need to put our entire mind and heart into pursuing unity and fusion now, to confront the other side and preserve life."

>>>He seriously expects people to buy that this pseudo-science talk about "ether" and "polarities" (lifted, seemingly, from the Tesla conspiracy theories) is somehow Mayan?

Be clear. Follow a tradition with great roots. It is not important what tradition, your heart will tell you, but it must have great roots.

>>>"Not important what tradition?" Pretty bizarre claim.

According to Mr. Barrios this is a crucially important moment for humanity, and for earth. Each person is important. If you have incarnated into this era, you have spiritual work to do balancing the planet.

>>>Pretty goofy claim, the Mayan don't believe in reincarnation. Wrong kind of Indian, Barrios.

He said the elders have opened the doors so that other races can come to the Mayan world to receive the tradition. The Maya have long
appreciated and respected that there are other colors, other races, and other spiritual systems. "They know," he said, "that the destiny
of the Mayan world is related to the destiny of the whole world..."

>>>How very convenient for your book sales.

Carlos Barrios is the author of the Spanish book, Kam Wuj: El Libro Del Destino. Carlos is in the process of having the book translated and published in English. Carlos can be contacted via Saq?Be? Organization for Mayan and Indigenous Spiritual Studies at: Saq'Be'~

One eventual consequence of Guatemala箂 long-enduring climate of terrorism, has been mistrust and criticism. From this few are immune.
Accusations are often aimed at people who purport to speak of the Mayan traditions. Mr. Barrios is enmeshed in this matrix of uncertainty. He criticizes others, and he is criticized himself.

>>>Amazing, and truly despicable, to blame Guatemala's civil war for people criticizing his Nuage exploitation.

Subject: [nafps] More on Sac Be & Carlos Barrios, Carl Calleman (Annika)
? ?
Listed on more than 200 Nuage sites, most of them claiming he is an actual Mayan elder. I couldn't find a single tie to any legit activist group or him working with any of them. The closest thing he
has to respectability is talking The Native Press into printing one of his articles where he presented himself *as Mayan*

The Deer Tribe and Manataka both promote him. On Manataka's site, a Swedish medical scientist named Carl Johan Calleman is also pushing
his own book about Mayan calendars. Annika, have you heard of him?
http://www.manataka.org/page183.html

Barrios may actually have been a politician of the center-right Guatemalan political party the Christian Democrats. He (or someone with an identical name) is mentioned about halfway down here.
http://www-
personal.engin.umich.edu/~pavr/harbury/archive/cerigua/cwb17_97.html

And at one time he may have actually done good work. He's described as president on the "Congress of Mayan Priests" eight years ago.
http://www.tulane.edu/~libweb/RESTRICTED/CERIGUA/1996_0425.txt
In spite of the grandiose name though, the Congress was actually about a dozen and half people that are only from *some* of *one* of
the more than *two dozen* different Mayan groups in the country.

Both of those last two are assuming he is the same person. His name is a very common Latino one.

Their site claims to be supporting Mayan need, but I see far more about what white Nuagers can get out of Mayans on that site. Virtually everything they do is pseudo-spiritual tourism. Their links
are to other Nuagers like wovoca.com, and even the nominally "Mayan" links are actually Nuage ones. They do link to some good organizations, but I see no sign at all they actually work with them.

SaqBe@SacredRoad.org
-Saq' Be': Organization for Mayan and Indigenous Spiritual Studies is a non-profit organization in our third year of existence. The organization is operated on a completely volunteer basis primarily by Co-Directors Adam Rubel (28) and Zoraida Palacios (31), with one other board member, as well as what we receive in the way of
additional support from the broader community. Saq' Be' was formed at the request of Mayan Ajq'ij (priests) that the founders had come to know through meetings both here in the states and in Guatemala...

>>>In other words, we are doing this on behalf of them. It seems to me they'd name which alleged elders if this were true.

The co-directors are both from the modern world; Adam is from New Jersey and Zoraida is from Ecuador.

>>>How very racist. NDNs can't be "modern" naturally.

Saq' Be' serves as part of a bridge between the modern and Indigenous world. The elders have their prophecies about this time, a time when
people from all over the world with different color skins would return to learn the ancient ways (prophecy of Iq'i Balam). We work to facilitate this by arranging for groups to travel to Guatemala to
meet directly with Ajq'ij and Indigenous communities to learn, participate in ceremony, and provide much needed support to the communities. We also bring Ajq'ij and Indigenous leaders and guides to the US, as we have brought Carlos Barrios from Guatemala, a representative from the Arhuacu tribe in the Sierra Nevada de Santa
Marta in Colombia and plan for others.

>>>"Spiritual tourism will save the world" apparently.

At this young stage, we have been drawn to the realization that we, who were raised in this modern world, must confront the latent
tendencies that can be described as "colonialism" which we have inherited. We feel that each of us has our ancestors; we each came from an Indigenous tradition.

>>>More "Indian by heart" nonsense.

Many of these traditions have been lost, some for thousands of years, leaving generation after generation to wander upon this earth without
feeling the connectedness to our mother, without recognizing the respect for life and the need to create balance amongst all of our relationships. All of our tribes, except for the few remaining
Indigenous peoples of this earth, share this similar fate.

>>>More racism, the whole "Vanishing Indian" image.

We have been taught for generations the importance of self over community, of domination over nature and over each other, of control
and power for individual purposes rather than for the good of the whole. We have lost our sense of justice, the sacred laws. And perhaps most important, we lost our ways to heal our wounds. We feel that this is why the remaining Indigenous cultures are so important, that it is so important that we make every effort to ensure they are
not absorbed or destroyed. We believe that we can listen and learn from these people, that we can regain what has been lost for all of those generations. But first, we must confront the tendencies to exploit, to conquer, to serve selfish motives even though we may describe it as something else. We do not believe we need to become something we are not (Indian or Mayan or whatever), rather we can learn from these people without romanticizing their lives and without
de-valuing ours.

>>>Someone give them a dictionary and have them look up hyoocrisy.
