Larry Peters, "Tibetan Shaman"
« on: October 25, 2008, 08:45:28 pm »
I recognized this one as something I happened across some time ago, but forgot about. Came across this site again online:

http://www.tibetanshaman.com

(Note the white sage bundle on the intro page. Very Tibetan, to be sure :-/)

Larry G. Peters, Ph. D.

1212 Old Topanga Cyn Road
TOPANGA, CA 90290

lpshaman@aol.com

(310) 455-2623

It appears he is affiliated with the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers through his association with Aama Bombo.

Quote
Dr. Peters conducts workshops on Tibetan Shamanism in cities across the U.S., and brings several groups to Nepal each year for Initiation Pilgrimages with Aama Bombo, including Janai Purnima.

Peters is a "research associate" with Harner's Foundation for Shamanic Studies.

Peters also owns and operates a talent management company with his wife, Carol: Peters Management Syndicate, http://petersmgmt.com/.

Side note:

"Tibetan shamans", it seems, live in big, expensive houses these days...at least those that aren't really Tibetan and who live in southern California and who have lots of alphabetics after their names: 2,311 square feet assessed at around $422K according to the LA County Assessor.

Boy, the life of a shaman sure is rough...

Someone who puts out a shingle online at Tibetanshaman.com withn such a pretty obvious non Asian name deserves as much crediblity as say, someone who starts a website called medwoman.com...

He charges for pilgrimages. And notice this.

http://www.tibetanshaman.com/pil.html
"Participants receive teachings, healings, and initiation from Aama Bombo (Mother Shaman), a famous healer who embodies Kali and treats as many as 50 patients a day"

She's seriously claiming to be a goddess?

And supposedly treating 50 a day. I don't even think the worst snake oil faith healer would claim that.

A website run by someone Peters trained has this to say about him.

http://www.snow-leopard.net/larry.htm
"Dr. Peters is a professor of Anthropology & Psychology at The California Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology & Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles, and a Board Member of the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness."

His student Patty Cooper AKA Snow Leopard, same site.

"Patty Cooper has a background of 23 Years as a music educator & 16 years as a shamanic healer. She has studied North American Core Shamanism with the Michael Harner Foundation for Shamanic Studies. For the past 10 years Patty has shared a teacher–student relationship with Dr. Larry Peters who is a licensed psychotherapist, world-renowned scholar, author and an initiated shaman in the Tibetan Tamang tradition....
Patty lives and does her shamanic healing work in beautiful Nanoose Bay off the coast of British Columbia. She is available to do healing or teaching work with either individuals or in a group workshop upon request."

Another franchisee, Carolyn Kenner, will cure you of "spiritual parasites."
Apparently irony is something she doesn't get.

http://mythkenner.com/methods.html

Yet another franchisee, Carol Lindsay AKA Hummingbord Woman, has worked with a bunch of frauds.

http://www.hummingbirdwoman.com/bio.asp
"She has studied the medicine way with Sun Bear, AmyLee and Jane Winyote Ely, shamanic studies with Jane Winyote Ely (Native American), Tom Cowan (Celtic shamanism) and Larry Peters (Tibetan shamanism), taken workshops with Babatunde Olatungi, Stephen Levine, Shelby Hammitt and a wilderness encounter with Doug Elliott through Omega Institute."

Another franchisee/victim learning from numerous frauds.

And don't miss out on his http://www.shamangear.com/ page, where you can buy all the hot items for today's L.A. Chic Shameon! Hurry! Before all the chicest items are gone! Specially blessed, for YOU!!! By the white guy! Don't miss out!!!

ETA: And here we discover that the L.A. Shaman has never watched a tree grow: "If you hang [the Tibetan Prayer Flags] between trees, as is often done outside Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, they will grow closer to the sky each year."

I know not everyone grew up in the country, or, uh, had trees where they lived... but I hope I don't need to explain how funny this one is.
