Both of the last two times we were down, it was hacking attempts on our server that probably were aimed at sites besides ours. For that reason and one other big one, all of the mods decided to move NAFPS to another more secure server.
I may as well address the rumors started by some nutjobs out there, namely Betsy Ashby. The other reason I mentioned above included a debate amongst the moderators.
The owner of our last server believes in hosting virtually any and all websites, no matter how controversial or whether or not they agreed with the views of that site. They host over 300 websites. Out of that, about two dozen are racist or far right extremist websites. Most of the sites they host are in fact not listed for various reasons and would not come up in an online search. That means the racist sites make up less than 8% of the sites they host.
Whether you agree with the view of our old server's owner or not, what they do is not unusual. Anyone whose taken a look at Yahoogroups or MSN or many others knows that these very big server themselves host (or hosted in the past) some pretty sickening groups, including racists, political extremists, the worst kinds of women hating porn, even some borderline illegal child porn at times. Being on a server does not mean you agree with the views of any of the other sites that server hosts. NAFPS being on a server that also hosts (among many others) racist sites is not different from what any yahoogroup does.
We did not originally know about the racist sites being hosted by our last server. We only found out later, and would not have used them as a server had we known.
But once we found out, the moderators debated among ourselves. Our last server making a small part of its money off of racist groups still bothered us. Personally I wanted to get to a different server as soon as we could. And I had actually thought we had switched back to an even older server.
It was only later that I found out we had not switched back. And once I realized that, we the moderators set about searching for yet another server. The latest hacking attempt at the server only hastened our move.
I also want to say what all the frauds don't seem to get through their thick heads, and racist nuts like Ashby don't get either:
We are not going away. We will outlast you. Deal with it.
Every attack against us has only backfired, made us stronger and more determined, and made you look far worse by showing everyone your true nature.
