I first met this guy calling himself david 2 bears in about 1995. He had posted an Ad in the local paper saying he was forming a NA group. I attended figuring I could lend a hand with some projects he might get going. There were about 12 white people there and about 2 women that looked to possibly be Indian. 2 bears looked Indian and was wearing some regalia. He said he was Lakota. I joined the group and helped out with a couple of projects. During this time, I saw an ID he had that said he was Lakota and he had a pipe. He did a few good things to his credit, including a clothing drive to a rez, organized a small pow-wow that pretty much fizzled and the group got into a grave fight. A 3000 year old guy, rather his remains, was being held by Anthropologists. He was returned to his grave that was robbed. 2 bears did some kind of ceremony and used that pipe in the process. I saw this. At one point, he advertised in the paper that he was going to start a Lakota language class but I think that didn't pan out. He had bad financial problems, got married and that was trouble too and he moved on.
A couple of years later, I was at a pow-wow up in Bullet county and spoke with some Indian Vets about him. They all doubted he was an Indian and one guy told me he caught 2 bears spraying himself with tanning dye one time. Some time later, I spoke with a guy from 2 bears group and he said 2 bears had borrowed alot of money from him and never paid him back. I forgot about him until I joined this forum.
On 3/21/08, I spoke with a woman from the Native American Kentucky Resource Center. This outfit is out of Louisville - her name is Brenda and I can provide their phone number upon request. I told her who I was and asked if she knew or knew of david 2 bears. She said she knew of him but hadn't seen him around in a couple of years. I then shared with her what I knew of him and told her I had joined this outfit that exposes crooks. I asked her to tell me what she knew of him and this is what she told me:
She said several years ago in Bardstown, Ky 2 bears had formed a small group and had started up a security company called Navajo Security. He was telling people that he was Navajo. The NA Ky. Resource Center did some investigating then Brenda and few others, including a Navajo woman, drove to Bardstown and confronted him. Brenda said he quickly took the sign off his truck and left town and has not been seen since.
These are the facts on this guy. I guess he is a small time crook but you never know what they grow into. I doubt he will change his name so keep a sharp eye peeled for him.
