Jimi Hendrix was not a Cherokee.
I have been a genealogist for my tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs spanning a period of 30+ years. I and others have researched Hendrix's family claims of Cherokee identity and they don't pan out. In fact, they are so far off the mark as to be laughable. Now, let me point something out for you and other individualists. Indian identity is a tribal matter. It is our business to protect the integrity of who we are and the influences our people have had on each other and other Americans. If there has been a Cherokee influence on American music, it is important that it be a legitimate influence, not a fabricated one. And finally, just because something happened in the past, does not mean it happened to them. I have no idea what the Hendrix family agenda might be to claim Indian ancestry, except that it makes for a more marketable product, more exotic if you will. And now look, they have opened up another venue for the promotion and sale of Hendrix music and souviers just by saying three words, "I am Cherokee." You do the math on that one.
Before taking the DNA test, Oprah said she didn’t believe she had any European or Native American ancestors. Her test results showed her to be correct about the European ancestry (she had 0 percent), but wrong about the Native American part (8 percent). She also learned she was 3 percent East Asian.
Beyonce is Creole due to her French Colonial ancestors.
