I noticed this issue being a topic of interest !
I have Friends Who Are Monacan's located in Elon (Amheast county)
at Bear mountain VA ! ..one published book  "Miners & Monacans"
By Sam L Cook (the tribe recives all royalties from sales)
If you want contact info  let me know It might take a day or SO !

I have visited several times and They are connected to many other
tribes who Are NOT Recognized  state or federal  !
I know I.m one of them !... Mike

I tried emailing that Monacan Tribe a couple of times and never got a
reply. There was a Solomom Richey who was a "free person of color"
1811 in Amherst County, who had a squabble with a Mr. Painter (also a
free person of color I believe). This is recorded in probate records
of Amherst County. I have a John Richey ancestor b. 1797 Va (all I
know -- we've never found a record of his parents). If you will look
at the photo section here at NAPFS yahoo group under Hawkins you will
see photos of some of our Richey's and see they are Indian. I
mentioned this to the Monacans in email addreses I found on their
website more than once and they never did respond to me.

When I spoke of all Virginia Indians being Christianized, this
occurred more than a quarter of a millennia ago -- 250 years at the
latest. I read it at the forum at www.Saponitown.com. where I
regularly post.

Of course people today can accept or reject whatever religion they
choose. In 1750 they didn't have this option. If they became
Christian they would be more easily accepted. Indians were being
rounded up and enslaved on the east coast back then.

I know there are state recognized tribes in Virginia, as there are in
Alabama, the Carolinas, Georgia, and probably other states. These
states routinely reject Federal control being "States Rights" states.
That is probably why they chose to recognize Indian peoples who are
not eligible for BIA recognition. That, and the tourist industry.

I don't know how legit these groups are. Can you explain more about
this "Virginia Council of Indians"? Alabama has a state board that
regulates their state recognized tribes. Please don't put my
curiosity down as disaproval of state recognized tribes -- I believe
the Cherokee Nation dissaproves of southeastern states
recognizing "Cherokee Tribes" saying many members are neither Indian
nor are they Cherokee. I've heard good and bad conserning these.

Al, you said you didn't believe the fake tribes would ever receive
federal recognition 50 years in the future and I hope you are right,
but I am not as certain about this as you are. And what about state
recognition? It was really these that I was thinking of when I said I
was tempted to join. Maybe the BIA is tightening the requirements for
federal recognition, but many states have looser requirements, and
recognize tribal entities on their own.
