Hensci,
I heard about your group on one of the lists the other day and thought I'd check it out.
Who do I see on the infamy list but Brooke Shiavi!!!  (I knew her when she was Cherokee.)
I guess she is still at it. too bad.

Anyway, I am a Muscogee citizen, now living in the Maine woods (we love it here).
Anybody else in central Maine?

I have a  lot of reading to do to get up to speed but I think yours is a very worthwhile endeavour.
Nothing more disgusting than prostituting spirituality

Thank you for your kind words and welcome to the forum. It would seem that our recent difficulty has backfired on the person who caused it: all it's done is make more people aware of us.

Hensci Barnaby,
Always a silver lining I guess.  A host that's more aware of the issues or at least not spineless (as you say) is a bonus as well.

I showed my wife Mendacity Eagle's new website.  She was outraged to say the least.  She immediately said, "Let's call the Crows."  which she proceeded to do, speaking to Vice Chairman Black Eagle.  He was very interested to learn that they had a tribal member by that name, who was selling vision quests.  He said he would be forwarding all info to the appropriate authorities and taking steps.

What steps?  I kinda wonder.  What recourse does he have?  Fraud at least is illegal and she posted the proof right on her website.  I'll be interested to see what happens.

This brings a few questions to mind.  What is the scope of your activities here?  The research and publishing is great, but how aggressively do you pursue these people? and how widely does the info get disseminated?  I can't imagine the Dominant Culture has any laws in place to discourage cultural and spiritual exploitation (as if), so what recourse is there for obvious frauds?

Maybe I should have put this in a new thread.  I am unfamiliar with this format and find it a little confusing.
I imagine it will grow on me.

Mvto again for the work you are doing

Can you keep us posted? You can update any thread by clicking on the 'reply' button at the bottom.

I can only speak for myself really. My activities are mostly helping to keep the forum running smoothly, sometimes contributing to discussions here. Once or twice I have joined in with a frank exchange of views with an exploiter in the flesh, in company with other NAFPS members (you know who you are). I don't know how many people are also active in this way in the real world (quite a few I imagine), and I don't think we will ever know how many people we've helped stay clear of exploiters and treat Native people with respect. It's also impossible to know exactly how widely we're read but clearly we are reaching the right people since you and your other half have been in touch with the Crows over Brookie.

The short answer is that I don't know. I gather that many native people are of the opinion that the dom. cult. has no business deciding who is and who is not legit in Native communities. If someone has been defrauded in the usual legal sense then their recourse is the police or maybe the FBI if they're in the US. This site offers another recourse, the chance to warn others.
