Sonora filmmaker gets probation for taping American Indian dances

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. —
A federal judge has sentenced a Sonora filmmaker to nearly 200 hours of community service and a year of unsupervised probation for improperly shooting American Indian ceremonial dances in Yosemite National Park.

Sixty-year-old Lorenzo Baca said he wanted to take footage of the June 2002 dances in the park's Indian Village for a 30-minute movie intended for home or educational use.

But three years later, a park service worker spotted his video on sale in one of the park's gift shops.

Baca was found guilty of trespassing on a cultural resource and doing business in the park without a permit.
