Visiting Southwest Trading Post Can Be An Education

Chants and drums, graceful Navajo pottery and a hand-carved bench welcome visitors outside, while an Apache family greets people inside.

The sounds and sights say New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, but the Southwest Trading Post, a showcase of Native American crafts, has set up its protective totem poles and dream catchers in Highwood.

And if you're not sure what a dream catcher is, just ask Highland Park owner Billie Leiser or any of her family who help run the store.

Brother Jaimie Herrera of Highwood carves the wooden benches and decorative hanging display cases to order. The decorative prairie pillows are a specialty of sister Ofelia Miller of Chicago. Leiser's daughter Monique, 12, also pitches in.

"She enjoys helping customers. And she's a fast learner," Miller said. "Someday we hope to turn the shop and our traditions over to the children."

Tradition: That is what this shop is all about. With a nod toward today's environmental concerns, Lesier explained that Native Americans have always lived harmoniously with nature.

And she used the dream catcher as an example. Yes, it is supposed to catch children's bad dreams and let the good ones through. But pointing to the circle of willow framing the dream catcher, Leiser told how it was cut from the tree at an angle. "That way it won't hurt the tree. That's the way we were taught-to live with nature, not hurt it," she said.

Family members exult in talking about their Native American heritage, which they trace maternally through Texas back to New Mexico. "When we sell a piece, we like to give information about its symbolism, where it came from, the artist," Leiser said. She added, "When we get pieces, we sit down with the artist so we can explain the piece."

Items range from 50-cent pine cones and $3.99 healing beads to $400 pottery and $900 paintings.

"We think our prices are good. We're not trying to get top price, just a fair price for the artists," Leiser said.

"This is all part of somebody's heritage," she said gesturing toward the culture-filled shop.

So this looks to be three generations of a family that progressed through selling crafts, spiritualism, ceremony. All trading on claimed Mescalero Apache heritage.

The one with the most active polished web and workshop presence is Billie.

Later in the morning a wonderful group of souls from Chicago came. They are students of the Mystical Sciences Institute (MSI) and their leader is a native American, Billie Topa Tape. They are staying on Kauai for a retreat/conference on mantras, mudras and health therapies. Many met Gurudeva on his recent stop in Chicago and are reading his books and subscribe to Hinduism Today. Today they came to the monastery for puja and a meditation in the temple and a long nature walk on the San Marga land.

I think she's probably talking about that British law saying fortune tellers and supposed psychics can be prosecuted for fraud.

The idea that being psychic is part of Apache tradition is more BS from her. There were Apache people who had visions of the future, but it wasn't something you can call up on demand. It happened and caught the person by surprise, coming whether you wanted it or not, and might only happen once in a lifetime. And it sure as hell wasn't something to make money off. And some medicine people could see far away, but again, not something you abuse for petty profit.

I had an encounter with the mother Billie TT some time back, when NAFPS was just starting out. I had the emails on an old account that was hacked and deleted by one of our early harasser, so this is all from memory as best I can recall.

She had a Nuage shop in Chicago. I emailed her, asking what she taught. She gave me the same laundry list of Nuage nonsense. I emailed back asking why she did that, what she knew of Mescalero tradition, doesn't she k now it's wrong etc. There was a brief answer sayign she was an artist, it's all in the name of peace, the usual cliches. I tried explaining again and got no answer. I even tried going up to Chicago (I was at Purdue at the time) but her shop had gone.

I think the family could be Mescalero, but I'm not sure. Herrera is a common name, most Mescalero names are Hispanic. Leiser and Salter and Topa Tate sure aren't, they must be married names except for the last.

But the family doesn't know anything or doesn't care about anything but the Nuage nonsense, or pan NDN crafts like dreamcatchers. (Even those, damn that's ugly. Dayglo psychedelic colors like some hippie would make.) When she calls them Apache dreamcatchers, no such thing, other than they are dreamcatchers made by an Apache family. The fans don't look half bad, but the rest they teach is so much Nuage. I doubt you could make much money off blessing mescal pits in Chicago, or kinaalda which is only for young girls. So they take a grab bag and sell it to the gullible. So sad when frauds pass fraud down as "family tradition." Reminds me of the Pope family.

It is strange she died so young. I don't think she was much older than me, maybe in her early 50s. Has anyone seen an obituary mentioning a cause of death?

Billie is still alive, recently had a 60th birthday. Her mother "Mama Little Wolf" recently passed on.

Edit: I might be wrong about thinking a family member has passed on. Haven't found any obituaries, and the tribute video doesn't state anything explicitly.
