Charles Lawrence, traveled many years with the Elders of the Hopi, Coast Salish, Lakota, Seneca, Mohawk, Ojibway, Navajo and Shoshone Nations, as well as traditional practitioners of Peru, Finland, South Africa, Tuva and other First Nations peoples throughout the world. Charles, mixed European and First Nations descent; weaves Native American teachings and cross-cultural shamanic practices into his dynamic teaching style. Charles is one of the original trio who brought the once dormant ‘Naraya’; a dance of Spiritual Renewal, back to life.
He was adopted and baptized by the Hopi Indians some 20 years ago. The spokesman of the native thought came to Finland for the celebration of the Finnish association “Four Winds”.
The Sacred Pipe that I use in my circle is a representation of the cosmos, the great mystery. The sacred feminine, the bowl; the sacred masculine, the stem; when they are joined together and I tie on the eagle feather, it becomes the unifying principle of life: masculine, feminine and spirit. There are special medicinal herbs in the Pipe, both Hopi and Navajo
Years ago, when on Hopi, I was told that people came to visit because I made them laugh. I wondered if they were laughing at me or with me.
Groups of 10 or 15 visit Rivas's camp (cost for 11 days, including airfare, four all-night ayahuasca ceremonies and voluntary tip to the shaman: $2,000). I also met Charles Lawrence, with whom had quite a confrontation. I told him how I felt about contrary elk medicine, about medicine men who misuse their power to violate women (crudely known as "humping a white woman in a sweat lodge"). What he told me was shocking, but now I know it is true. "You choose everything that happens to you," he said. He said to be thankful to all my teachers.
Charles Lawrence/Golden Eagle is a former businessman who was adopted by the Hopi 20 years ago. He is closely connected to the few remaining traditional Hopi Indians and has been their spokesman on many occasions.
Monthly meetings with our guide, Charles Lawrence, elicited clearer and clearer focus on our intentions in the jungle. Ayahuasca is called "la vina del muerte," the vine of death, and we were asked repeatedly to focus on those parts of ourselves we were preparing for death, those parts we would leave behind in the jungle.
Our bodies were prepared in other ways. For the month prior to the journey, we were to eat a shamanic diet of no meat and no sugar; no caffeine was probably even more difficult. Our diet was to concentrate on fresh vegetables and rice, with occasional fish and eggs.
