Sells just about every ceremony you can think of, from naming to weddings to blessings to face painting to "will make you an apprentice." Photos on his site show entirely non-Native customers. Works in Sedona, seemingly not among the Havasupai.

I didn't find anything of note in the Arizona court records or PACER (case & docket information from federal appellate, district & bankruptcy courts).

James Uqualla is mocked some for having a dramatic performance style, his supporters say that JU has a theatrical background, including in costume design.

JU refers to Great Spirit and All My Relations in his speeches, he sure seems to be saying that anyone can take anything, looks like he is definitely making a pitch to sell to spiritual tourists. They can come away reassured that they have the right to take anything they want, because JU says so.

JU generally dresses in a Plains tribe style knockoff combined with...flamboyant touches. Sometimes what he wears seems like a strange combination of imitating both the Dalai Lama and Mr. T.

Even if you strip away the theatrical touches, his regalia is a knockoff of other tribes. The Havasupai have a pretty distinctive look.

JU mostly comes across as a theater actor playing the role of shaman for white audiences. He talks a lot of generic NDN stuff. Havasupai and Hualapai (they're the same people, but were split into two rezzes by the govt) beliefs are very specific to their homeland.

A classmate of mine in grad school wrote the very first history of the Hualapai about 8 years ago. They were just that unknown, even among historians. It's no wonder JU can take advantage of outsiders' lack of knowledge of the Pai.

I now see that the video is actually 6 minutes 35 seconds, and has been viewed some almost incredible 160 thousand times. At least for me 30 seconds is still adequate, all of it sickens me.

Uqualla is used as a token through out this project. Usually he seems quite willing to play the part. But we also see some subtle uncomfortable moments.
