MAGAbomber Not Seminole, Says Seminole Tribe of FLA

Cesar Sayoc, 56, who was taken into custody on Friday morning in Plantation, Florida — who has been called out on social media as a possible member of the Seminole Tribe for posting a series of tweets that proclaim “We Unconquered Seminole Tribe” — is, according to the Seminole Nation, not a member nor an employee.

Gary Bitner, a spokesperson for the Seminole Tribe of Florida issued the following statement:

“We can find no evidence that Cesar Altieri, Caesar Altieri, Caesar Altieri Sayoc, Ceasar Altieri Randazzo (Facebook) or Julus Cesar Milan (Twitter) is or was a member or employee of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, or is or was an employee of Seminole Gaming or Hard Rock International. At this time, we cannot verify if he is or was an employee of a vendor company.”

NAJA urges media outlets to confirm tribal citizenry before reporting

After of the Oct. 26 arrest of mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc Jr., some outlets reported that he is a citizen of the Seminole Tribe of Florida without confirmation from the tribe. The Seminole Tribe of Florida, through a statement, confirmed that he is not and has never been a citizen of their tribe.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding a story, the Native American Journalists Association urges all media outlets to verify tribal citizenship before reporting someone is Indigenous. When possible, NAJA also urges outlets to specifically identify the name of the person’s tribe, nation or band, such as the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma or the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Sayoc's van was seized when he was apprehended. Before law enforcement officials covered it with a tarpaulin, reporters took photos of the van, whose windows were covered with multiple stickers including flags, images of "liberal figures framed in crosshairs", and posters supporting Trump. Some posters also supported the "unconquered Seminoles", a Native American tribe. Sayoc has been described as proudly claiming Native American heritage, although the Seminole Tribe of Florida said there was no record of his being a member or employee of the tribe. His father is a Filipino immigrant and his mother was born in the Bronx, having Italian heritage. His father abandoned him as a child. He was born in Brooklyn and moved to Florida as a child.
