FOR SHAMANIC STUDIES AND HEALING
SWEAT LODGE CEREMONIES
Held in Rowley, MA
SWEAT LODGES
The Eye of the Eagle Center will be offering sweat lodges on a regular basis beginning in September 2006. Lodges will be held in September, October, and then bi-monthly. ? Sweat lodge ceremonies will be led by Leontine Hartzell and will be held at The Center ( a Spar and Spindle Girl Scout Council camp), 390 Wethersfield Street, Rowley, MA (directions below). ? The Center is approximately 40 minutes north of Boston.
REGISTRATION
Pre-registration for all the lodges is required as space is limited. ? To register please email info@eyeoftheeaglecenter.org with your name, address, email address and phone number.
For those attending the sweat on September 10, we invite anyone willing to assist in the building of the lodge to arrive at 9:30 a.m. ? Saws and jack knives will be needed, so please bring these items if you have them. Some tools will be available for use. Donations of blankets and tarps would be most welcome. ? The building of the sweat becomes a ceremony in and of itself so we invite you to help us with this beautiful task. ? Please call or email if you plan on arriving early to help. ? We need at least 10 people to help build the lodge, so please volunteer! We thank you in advance!
Fire Keeper: One way to offer your time, energy and prayers for your sisters and brothers doing a sweat lodge is to volunteer to be a fire keeper. Fire keepers build and ? tend the fire for 3 hours before the lodge begins while the stones heat up. During the lodge time the fire keeper tends the fire and helps carry rocks into the lodge. If there is more than one fire keeper it can be possible for the fire keepers to take turns going into the lodge for one or more rounds. This is a sacred duty and tending the fire can be a powerful experience as it is done prayerfully and with generosity! If you are interested in being a fire keeper please contact the Eye of the Eagle Center by email.
SWEAT LODGE INFORMATION
Sweat lodge ceremonies take place in a small domed structure, representing the womb of the Mother. ? It is here, while cocooned in this beautiful, warm, dark and sacred space that we will call upon the ancestors, the ancient ones, the stone people and all the helping spirits to ask for our bodies, minds and souls to be purified so that we may emerge anew. ? These ceremonies are sacred and powerful and we hope that you will be able to join us.
The sweat lodges led by Leontine Hartzell are co-ed and we ask that participants wear a bathing suit or lightweight shorts and T-shirt in the lodge. ? A towel for sitting on is useful, as is another to use when you exit the sweat. ? You may want to wear loose clothing or a bathrobe that is easy to slip on and off before entering the lodge. ? Please bring plenty of water. ? It is a good idea to be well hydrated before entering the sweat and please be prepared to drink lots of water after as well. It is also recommended that you eat lightly or not at all before the sweat lodge ceremony.
It is also recommended that you abstain from alcohol for at least 3 days, preferably a week, before the lodge.
A sweat lodge ceremony consists of four ‘rounds??? in which heated stones are brought into the lodge and water is sprinkled on them to create steam. Each round is dedicated to one of the four directions and has a specific intent. Prayers, songs and chants fill the lodge during each round. There are breaks between each round, where participants are able to leave the lodge if they wish, either for a few minutes or for the remaining time. Lodges will be held from 1-6 pm, followed by a potluck dinner. Bathrooms will be open in the Girl Scout center adjacent to the sweat lodge site.
